Tackling the Annual Festive Rush
The festive season in India, particularly the period encompassing Dussehra, Diwali, and Chhath Puja, witnesses one of the largest annual movements of people in the country. Professionals and students working in Tier-1 cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru,
and Kolkata travel back to their hometowns, leading to an overwhelming demand for train tickets. To prevent chaos and ensure more people can journey home, Indian Railways has made this an annual exercise. For 2026, the national transporter is significantly ramping up its operations between October 1 and November 30 to cater to this predictable, yet massive, surge in passenger traffic.
By the Numbers: A Record Expansion
This year's plan is one of the most extensive to date. Indian Railways is set to operate approximately 3.4 lakh regular train trips during the two-month festive window. On top of this, as of mid-October, a massive 8,454 special train trips had been notified to create additional berths on high-demand corridors. This is a proactive measure to add capacity over and above the regular services. Furthermore, the railways have permanently augmented existing trains with 412 additional coaches, including 75 General Class coaches, to increase accommodation throughout the year, an effort that will prove critical during this peak season.
Focus on High-Demand Corridors
The bulk of these special services are concentrated on routes connecting major metropolitan hubs to destinations in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, which see the highest volume of travelers during Diwali and Chhath Puja. According to reports, Bihar has been allocated the largest share with 2,057 special train trips, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 1,056 trips. Major routes getting a boost include services connecting Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Chandigarh, and Bengaluru with cities like Patna, Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Ayodhya, and Kanpur. Special trains are also enhancing connectivity for West Bengal to handle the Durga Puja rush and for southern states, with the South Central Railway alone operating over 700 special services.
Key Special Train Routes Announced
Multiple railway zones have announced specific trains. Northern Railway is running services like the Varanasi-Delhi Special and Chandigarh-Patna Special. Eastern Railway has introduced trains such as the Howrah-Raxaul Special and Sealdah-Gorakhpur Special. Central Railway is operating 418 special services from Mumbai and Pune to destinations like Gorakhpur and Nagpur. For passengers in the south, special trains are connecting Bengaluru with Rangapara in Assam via Andhra Pradesh, and Guntur with Kolkata, providing crucial links between southern, eastern, and northeastern regions. These services run on specific dates with varying frequencies, so passengers are advised to check the schedules carefully.
How to Book and Travel Smart
Tickets for these special trains can be booked through the official IRCTC website and mobile app, as well as at Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters. Given the high demand, it is crucial to book well in advance. Passengers should be aware that many of these services operate as 'special trains on special charges', which may mean fares are higher than on regular trains. To manage crowds and ensure smooth boarding, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and additional staff will be deployed at major stations like Secunderabad, Delhi, and Hyderabad. Regulated queue systems for general compartments and extra ticket counters are also being set up to ease the process for travelers.
