The Golden Rule: Drainage
Before we get to the plants, the most critical factor for monsoon gardening is proper drainage. The biggest threat to your potted plants during this season is not neglect, but waterlogging, which can lead to root rot. Ensure every pot has at least one,
if not multiple, drainage holes at the bottom. You can elevate your pots on bricks or stands to help excess water escape freely. Using a well-draining potting mix, perhaps with some sand or cocopeat added to regular garden soil, will also prevent the soil from becoming a soggy mess.
1. Snake Plant (Sansevieria)
Often hailed as one of the most indestructible houseplants, the Snake Plant is a fantastic choice for the monsoon. It is incredibly low-maintenance and tolerates the high humidity of the rainy season exceptionally well. While it's known for its drought tolerance, its main advantage during monsoon is its resilience and dislike for being overwatered, which means you can largely let the rain (and good drainage) do the work. Its upright, architectural leaves also add a modern touch to any balcony space.
2. Hibiscus (Gudhal)
If you want vibrant, dramatic blooms throughout the rainy season, look no further than the Hibiscus. This tropical plant thrives in the warm, humid conditions of the Indian monsoon and often produces more flowers during this time compared to the dry summer months. It loves moisture but still requires well-drained soil to prevent its roots from sitting in water. With access to a few hours of sunlight, a Hibiscus plant will reward you with large, colourful flowers that bring a cheerful feel to grey, rainy days.
3. Money Plant (Pothos)
The ubiquitous Money Plant is a reliable and fast-growing option that excels during the monsoon. Its ability to thrive in a variety of light conditions, from shady corners to bright indirect light, makes it versatile for any balcony. The high humidity of the season encourages lush, rapid growth, making its trailing vines look particularly vibrant. Since it can grow in both soil and water, it is quite forgiving and a great choice for beginner gardeners. Just ensure its soil isn't perpetually waterlogged.
4. Ferns
Ferns are the quintessential moisture-loving plants, making them a perfect fit for a monsoon garden. Varieties like the Boston Fern or Sword Fern thrive in high humidity and indirect light, which are common conditions on many balconies during the rainy season. They bring a soft, lush, and wild aesthetic to your space. However, while they love moisture, good air circulation is important to prevent fungal issues, so avoid overcrowding your fern pots.
5. Periwinkle (Sadabahar)
For a splash of continuous colour with almost no effort, Periwinkle is an excellent choice. This hardy plant, known as Sadabahar in India, is exceptionally low-maintenance and tolerates heavy rains well. It blooms throughout the year, providing cheerful pink or white flowers that can brighten up even the gloomiest monsoon day. It works well in pots with good drainage and can handle both partial and full sun, making it a versatile and resilient addition to your balcony.
6. Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum)
With its elegant white blooms and glossy dark green leaves, the Peace Lily is another plant that enjoys the high-humidity environment of the monsoon. It prefers shaded or low-light conditions, making it ideal for balconies that don't receive direct sunlight. The moist air helps keep its leaves looking healthy and vibrant. While it likes consistently moist soil, it's crucial to ensure good drainage to avoid root rot, a common issue for this plant if overwatered.
