The Annual Festive Travel Challenge
Every year, millions of people travel from major metropolitan hubs to their hometowns to celebrate cornerstone festivals like Diwali and Chhath Puja with their families. This mass movement places immense pressure on the railway network, with tickets on popular
routes getting sold out within minutes of bookings opening, often months in advance. The result is long waiting lists, leaving countless passengers uncertain about their travel plans. The demand is particularly high for trains heading towards destinations in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Jharkhand from cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.
Railways' Response: A Boost in Services
To address this predictable surge, Indian Railways has announced a comprehensive plan to operate thousands of additional train trips during the festive period, which typically spans from October to the end of November. For 2026, the national transporter has notified over 8,400 special train trips to augment the 340,000 regular services already scheduled. This proactive measure aims to increase carrying capacity and provide more confirmed berths to passengers, thereby reducing the dependency on waitlisted tickets. Various railway zones, including Northern, Western, and Central Railways, have independently announced hundreds of special services to cater to the rush on their specific networks.
Focus on High-Demand Routes
These special services are strategically planned to connect major cities with destinations experiencing the highest demand. Key routes include Delhi to Patna, Mumbai to Gorakhpur, Bengaluru to Rangapara (Assam), Guntur to Kolkata, and many more services connecting to cities like Varanasi, Prayagraj, and Muzaffarpur. Even the premium Vande Bharat Express will see a special tri-weekly service running between New Delhi and Patna to cater to the festive demand. These trains will make stops at several important stations along the way, ensuring connectivity for passengers from various smaller towns as well.
How to Book These Special Trains
Booking for these festive special trains is available through the standard channels. Passengers can book tickets via the official IRCTC website (irctc.co.in) and the Rail Connect mobile app. Bookings are also open at all computerized Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters across the country. It is important for passengers to know that these special trains often have train numbers starting with '0' or '8'. Furthermore, the fares for these services are typically higher than regular trains due to 'special charges', a dynamic pricing model implemented to manage the high demand.
Tips for a Smoother Journey
While the additional trains provide significant relief, securing a seat still requires diligence. It is advisable to book as early as possible, as seats on popular routes fill up quickly even on these special services. Passengers should also remain flexible with their travel dates; travelling a day or two before or after the peak day can increase the chances of getting a confirmed ticket. Always double-check the train schedule, as departure and arrival timings for special trains can differ from regular services. To keep passengers informed, some railway zones have even started sending SMS alerts about newly announced special trains with seat availability to passengers who have previously travelled on those routes.
