A New Standard in Onboard Services
In a move to elevate the travel experience, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has introduced a comprehensive, technology-driven suite of onboard services. This initiative focuses on continuous and monitored upkeep throughout the journey, rather than
just at departure. It makes NFR the second zonal railway in the country to implement such a program. The upgraded services cover everything from the cleanliness of coaches and washrooms to the timely distribution of fresh linen and faster complaint resolution. Dedicated teams are now deployed on these trains to manage housekeeping, provide basic technical assistance, and ensure water availability. This shift represents a broader strategy within Indian Railways to treat onboard sanitation and passenger comfort as a core service standard, moving away from older models of periodic cleaning at designated stations.
1. Kamakhya-SMVT Bengaluru Express
As a popular long-distance service connecting the Northeast with Southern India, the Kamakhya-SMVT Bengaluru Express was one of the first to receive these enhancements. The upgraded services on this train began on October 14 from its originating station, Kamakhya. Passengers on this route can now expect more frequent and thorough cleaning of coach interiors and AC windows. A major focus is on washroom hygiene, which will be maintained by the dedicated onboard staff. The teams are also responsible for the efficient management of waste collection and ensuring bed linen is distributed and collected in a timely manner, improving the overall comfort on this lengthy journey.
2. Guwahati-Kolkata Garib Rath Express
The Guwahati-Kolkata Garib Rath Express, a vital and affordable link between Assam and West Bengal, began operating with the new services on October 10. For passengers on this train, the improvements are designed to make the journey more dignified and comfortable. The onboard teams address cleanliness issues proactively, ensuring that common areas and toilets are regularly attended to. This is a significant step up, especially for Garib Rath services, and aligns with the railway's goal of extending better amenities to all classes of travel. The initiative also includes a system for swift complaint resolution, aiming to address any passenger-reported issues within a two-hour window.
3. Dibrugarh-Mumbai LTT Express
Connecting the far eastern corner of Assam with the financial capital of Mumbai, the Dibrugarh-Mumbai LTT Express is another critical long-haul train now featuring these upgraded amenities. The service was rolled out on this train on October 11. Given the multi-day journey, the continuous presence of a housekeeping team is a welcome change for travellers. The staff are tasked with maintaining cleanliness throughout the trip, managing linen services, and even providing basic technical assistance for minor issues like faulty lights. This ensures that standards do not degrade over the course of the long journey, providing a consistently better environment from start to finish.
4 & 5. New Jalpaiguri Vande Bharat Express Trains
The premium Vande Bharat Express services are also part of this upgrade. Both the New Jalpaiguri–Patna Vande Bharat Express and the New Jalpaiguri–Guwahati Vande Bharat Express were equipped with the enhanced services on October 14. While these trains already operate at a high standard, the new initiative introduces a layer of digital monitoring and accountability. The system uses AI-based assessments and geo-tagged service verification to ensure cleaning tasks are completed correctly. Real-time passenger feedback and star ratings will be used to evaluate performance, creating a cycle of continuous improvement. This technology-first approach aims to solidify Vande Bharat's reputation for premium quality and service.
