A Major Boost for Regional Connectivity
The Railway Board has officially approved the introduction of the Surat-Udaipur City Vande Bharat Express, a move poised to significantly enhance the rail link between southern Gujarat and southern Rajasthan. Operated by the Western Railway zone, this
service is not just a new train but a strategic extension of connectivity. The new route effectively replaces and extends the previous Udaipur City-Asarva Vande Bharat Express, which was introduced in February 2026. By stretching the service to Surat, Indian Railways is creating a direct, premium corridor that will cater to tourists, business travellers, and families, linking two of Western India's most dynamic cities.
The Complete Route and All Stops
The train, numbered 26903/26904, will cover a distance of approximately 690 kilometres. During its journey, it will make nine commercial stops, ensuring it serves key towns and cities along the way. Starting from Surat, the train will halt at Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Maninagar, and Asarva in Gujarat. After crossing into Rajasthan, the designated stops are Himmatnagar, Shamlaji Road, Dungarpur, and Zawar before its final destination of Udaipur City. This route provides a vital link between industrial and commercial centres in Gujarat and the major tourist and administrative hubs in Rajasthan.
Schedule, Timings, and Frequency
The Vande Bharat Express between Surat and Udaipur will operate six days a week, with Tuesday being the designated day for maintenance and no service. For passengers travelling from Surat, train number 26903 will depart at 6:10 AM and is scheduled to arrive in Udaipur City at 1:40 PM the same day. On its return journey, train number 26904 will depart from Udaipur City at 3:35 PM and reach Surat at 11:00 PM. This schedule allows for convenient day travel in one direction and a comfortable evening return in the other, catering to both leisure and business itineraries.
Significant Reduction in Travel Time
One of the most significant advantages of this new service is the reduced travel time. The journey is expected to be completed in approximately 7 hours and 30 minutes. This is a substantial improvement compared to existing train services, which can take around 12 hours or more to cover a similar distance. The Vande Bharat Express is a semi-high-speed train, capable of running at a maximum speed of 160 kmph, though the average operational speed will be determined by track conditions. The train will feature an 8-car composition, providing both AC Chair Car and Executive Chair Car classes for passengers.
Fares and How to Book
While official fare structures are announced closer to the launch, estimates based on existing Vande Bharat services suggest that a journey in the AC Chair Car could cost between ₹1,400 and ₹1,800. For the premium Executive Chair Car, fares are expected to be in the range of ₹2,600 to ₹3,200. These prices are dynamic and can vary based on catering choices and other factors. Bookings for the Surat-Udaipur Vande Bharat Express will be available through the official IRCTC website and mobile app, as well as at passenger reservation counters. The launch is anticipated to happen before the festive season of Shardiya Navratri, which begins in October, to cater to the holiday travel rush.
