The Great Onam Travel Scramble
For Malayalis living outside Kerala, the Onam festival brings a familiar wave of joy and stress. The joy is in returning home to celebrate with family. The stress comes from booking a train ticket to get there. During the festive season in August and September,
demand for trains to Kerala from cities like Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Delhi skyrockets. Regular train tickets, which open for booking 120 days in advance, are often fully booked within minutes, leaving thousands on long waiting lists. This is where Indian Railways steps in with a crucial intervention: Onam special trains.
Understanding Special Festival Trains
To manage the immense passenger surge during festivals, Indian Railways operates hundreds of additional 'special' trains. For Onam 2026, the Railway Minister has announced that over 100 special services will be operated to clear the festive rush. These are not part of the regular schedule and are announced closer to the travel period, typically a few weeks or a month beforehand. These trains are a lifeline for those who couldn't secure a ticket on a regular train, providing thousands of extra berths on high-demand routes. However, booking them requires a different strategy than standard advance reservations.
Where to Find Official Announcements
The key to booking a special train is being among the first to know it exists. Announcements are made with very short notice. Your most reliable sources are official channels. The zonal railways, particularly Southern Railway, are the primary source. Check the 'Press Release' or 'News & Announcements' section of the Southern Railway website (sr.indianrailways.gov.in) daily. Another excellent source is the official X (formerly Twitter) handle of the zonal railways, where they post updates instantly. Finally, keep the IRCTC website and app handy, as newly announced trains will appear there once bookings open.
Decoding the Train Notification
When an announcement is made, it will contain specific details that you need to understand quickly. You will see the Train Number (special trains usually start with a '0'), the route (e.g., Mangaluru Central to Chennai Egmore), and the dates of service. The notification will also list the coach composition—how many AC 2-Tier, AC 3-Tier, Sleeper Class, and General coaches are available. Most importantly, it will specify the exact date and time that advance reservations will open, which is often the very next morning at 8:00 AM. Being ready at that precise moment is critical.
Your Booking Day Game Plan
Success depends on speed. Before booking opens, prepare your IRCTC account. Use the 'Master List' feature to save the names, ages, and ID details of all passengers. This saves you from typing everything manually when every second counts. Ensure your preferred payment method, like UPI or the IRCTC e-wallet, is ready for a quick transaction. When bookings open, log in a few minutes early, have your journey details and passenger list ready, and proceed to book the instant the clock strikes the designated time. Be prepared for the website to be slow due to high traffic, so patience and persistence are key.
Important Things to Keep in Mind
Special trains often run with 'special fares', which are dynamically priced and can be higher than regular train tickets. Also, many of these trains may not have a pantry car, so plan your food and water arrangements accordingly. Be flexible with your travel dates and even your choice of boarding or destination stations. Sometimes booking a ticket to a station just before or after your main destination can have better availability. Above all, rely only on official sources for information to avoid scams or misinformation.
