The New Route and Its Significance
In a major boost for connectivity, Indian Railways has approved a third Vande Bharat train service connecting Jammu Tawi and Srinagar. This new service, numbered 26407/26408, follows the successful launch of two other Vande Bharat trains on the same route,
which have been running at full capacity. The existing services were extended from Katra to Jammu Tawi on April 30, 2026, establishing the first direct, all-weather rail link between Jammu and the Kashmir Valley. This new train will also provide a crucial stop at Udhampur (Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan station), fulfilling a long-standing demand from the local population and improving access for the region. The journey, which traverses the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), replaces the arduous 8-11 hour road trip with a comfortable train ride of under five hours.
Schedule and Stops
While the exact timetable for the new third service is yet to be announced, it is expected to supplement the existing schedules to offer more flexibility. Currently, two pairs of trains operate daily services. Train 26401 departs Jammu Tawi at 6:20 AM, reaching Srinagar at 11:10 AM, and does not run on Tuesdays. Another service, train 26403, departs Jammu at 1:20 PM and arrives at 6:00 PM. Return journeys from Srinagar are also available. The key stops on this scenic route include Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan (Udhampur), Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, Reasi, and Banihal, covering the 269-kilometre distance in approximately 4 hours and 45-50 minutes.
Fare Structure and How to Book
Booking a seat on this in-demand train requires planning. Tickets can be booked through the official IRCTC website (irctc.co.in) or the IRCTC Rail Connect mobile app. Given the popularity, it's advisable to book well in advance, as seats often get filled within minutes of the booking window opening, which is typically 60 days. The fare structure is designed to be affordable. For the existing services, an AC Chair Car (CC) ticket costs approximately ₹715, while the more spacious Executive Chair Car (EC) is priced around ₹1,320, inclusive of catering. Prices for the new service are expected to be in a similar range.
The Onboard Experience: More Than Just a Train
The journey is as spectacular as the destination. The train travels over the world's highest railway arch bridge, the Chenab Bridge, which stands 359 metres above the riverbed. Passengers with window seats are treated to breathtaking vistas of the Pir Panjal range and deep valleys. These Vande Bharat trains are specially designed for the cold climate of Kashmir. They are equipped with advanced heating systems, insulated toilets, and heated windshields to prevent fogging and ensure smooth operations even in sub-zero temperatures. The coaches feature 180-degree rotating seats, Wi-Fi, GPS-based information systems, and onboard catering that often includes a taste of local Kashmiri cuisine.
Tips for a Smooth Journey
To make the most of your trip, a little preparation goes a long way. Always carry a valid government-issued photo ID, as it is mandatory for travel in the region and will be checked during boarding. For the best views of the Chenab Bridge, try to get a window seat on the right side when travelling from Jammu to Srinagar. Network connectivity can be patchy, especially when the train passes through the long tunnels like the 11-km Pir Panjal tunnel, so it's a good idea to download any entertainment beforehand. Finally, remember to dress in layers. The temperature can vary significantly between Jammu and the higher altitudes of the Kashmir Valley.
