In the IT services industry, the 'bench' refers to employees who are on the company's payroll but are not currently assigned to a client project. Much like substitute players in a sports team, these professionals are waiting for their next assignment.
Historically, major IT firms in India maintained a significant bench, often between 20-30% of their workforce. This reserve of talent allowed companies to respond quickly to new client demands and demonstrate they had the resources to start projects immediately. For employees, time on the bench was often a period for training, internal projects, or simply a breather between demanding assignments.
Why the Aggressive New Target?
Major Indian IT companies are now aiming to shrink their bench size to a lean 8-10% by 2027, a significant drop from previous levels. This strategic shift is driven by several factors. A primary motivator is cost efficiency; a large bench means paying salaries to non-revenue-generating employees, which impacts profitability. Amid cautious client spending and a slowdown in the tech sector, companies are tightening their belts. Furthermore, the rise of artificial intelligence and better workforce planning tools allows for more precise, demand-led hiring, reducing the need for a large just-in-case talent pool. This move bumps up the 'utilization rate'—the percentage of staff actively working on projects—which is a key metric for operational health.
The High Demand for Deployable Skills
A smaller bench directly translates to a higher demand for immediately deployable skills. Companies can no longer afford to have employees on the bench for extended periods, waiting to be trained for a future role. The time an employee can remain on the bench before being assigned a project has been reduced, in some cases from four months to just two. This puts the onus on tech professionals to possess skills that are in high demand right now. The most sought-after competencies for 2026 and beyond include AI and machine learning, cloud architecture (AWS, Azure, GCP), cybersecurity, data engineering, and full-stack development. The focus is on practical, project-ready expertise that allows an employee to transition seamlessly into a billable role.
The Impact on Tech Professionals
For the individual tech worker, this new reality is a double-edged sword. The pressure to constantly upskill is immense. Professionals are now expected to proactively seek out project opportunities and dedicate significant time to learning and certifications, even while on the bench. Those with niche, in-demand skills find themselves in a strong position, able to command better roles and compensation. However, those whose skills are becoming outdated face a higher risk of being let go. The 'safe' period on the bench is shrinking, and failure to secure a new project within a shorter timeframe can lead to termination, increasing job insecurity across the sector.

This trend represents a fundamental change in talent management for the IT industry. Companies gain efficiency and higher profitability but risk employee burnout and increased attrition if not managed carefully. A relentless focus on high utilization can stifle long-term, exploratory skill development in favor of immediate project needs.
