Forecasts Point to a Weaker Season
This year, the signs are concerning. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a 'below-normal' monsoon for the second half of the season, particularly for August. The cumulative seasonal rainfall was already 12% below the long-period average as of early August 2026. This deficit is driven in part by a developing El Niño, a climatic pattern that typically suppresses monsoon rainfall in India. While July saw some recovery, the distribution has been highly uneven, with many key agricultural districts still facing significant rainfall deficits. Experts are now warning that this could be the weakest monsoon in over a decade, raising alarms about its impact on agriculture.
From Paddies to Your Plate
The most immediate impact of a poor monsoon is on crop sowing and yields. As of mid-August, the area sown with Kharif crops was already lower than the previous year, with significant lags in rice, pulses, and maize. Vegetables are often the first to feel the pinch. Being highly perishable and dependent on regular harvests, their supply chains are quickly disrupted by either too little or too much rain, causing prices of daily essentials like tomatoes, onions, and leafy greens to spike within days. The prices of coriander, ginger, and garlic have already seen sharp increases due to erratic weather patterns.
The Impact on Pulses, Grains, and Oils
The effect on staples like pulses and cereals takes a bit longer to materialise but can be more significant for household budgets. Deficient rainfall in key growing regions reduces soil moisture, which can lower crop yields even if sowing has been completed. With acreage for pulses like tur already down, the government has had to manage its buffer stocks to control prices. While India has sufficient stockpiles of rice and wheat, lower production of rain-fed varieties could still put upward pressure on prices. Edible oils are a mixed bag; while domestic oilseed crops like soybean depend on the monsoon, prices are also heavily influenced by global markets and import policies.
Broader Economic Ripples
The consequences of a weak monsoon extend beyond the grocery store. Lower crop yields reduce farm incomes, which in turn dampens rural demand for everything from motorcycles to consumer goods. This can act as a drag on the entire economy. Furthermore, food prices are a major component of retail inflation. A spike in food prices can push overall inflation higher, prompting the Reserve Bank of India to maintain a cautious stance on interest rates, which affects borrowing costs for everyone. The RBI has already flagged the uneven monsoon as a key risk to India's inflation outlook.
