The core problem during the monsoon isn't just the rain; it's the humidity. When the air is already saturated with water vapour, evaporation slows down dramatically. Wet clothes release moisture into the surrounding air to dry, but if that air is already holding
close to its maximum water content, there's nowhere for the moisture to go. This is why a shirt that dries in an hour in May can stay damp for days in July. This prolonged dampness creates the perfect breeding ground for mould, mildew, and the bacteria that cause that unmistakable musty odour. The challenge, therefore, is not just about avoiding the rain, but about creating conditions that encourage evaporation despite the humid environment.
Why Smaller Loads Are the Solution
Counterintuitively, doing laundry more often—in smaller, more manageable batches—is the most effective strategy. Overloading your washing machine is a mistake at the best of times, but it’s a disaster during the monsoon. A packed drum prevents clothes from moving freely, leading to a less effective rinse that can leave behind detergent and grime residue, which feeds odour-causing bacteria. More importantly, a smaller load allows the washing machine's spin cycle to work more efficiently, extracting significantly more water before the clothes are even hung up to dry. Less water in the fabric from the start means a much shorter drying time, reducing the window for mustiness to develop.
Optimise Your Washing and Drying
Beyond load size, a few machine-setting tweaks can make a big difference. Always use the highest spin speed that your fabrics can safely handle. Some machines even have a ‘monsoon’ or ‘dump dry’ setting designed for this purpose. If yours doesn't, running an extra spin cycle can be a game-changer. When it's time to dry, strategic placement is key. Never bunch clothes together on a drying rack. Each garment needs its own air space. Give each item a good shake before hanging to separate the fibres and reduce wrinkles. Using individual hangers for shirts and tops can further improve airflow.
Mastering the Art of Indoor Drying
When drying outdoors is not an option, you need to create better conditions indoors. Air circulation is your best friend. Place your drying rack in a well-ventilated room, ideally with a fan running. A fan won't just blow on the clothes; it constantly moves the saturated air away and replaces it with drier air, speeding up evaporation. Running an air conditioner can also help, as it actively removes moisture from the air. For those in extremely humid areas, a dehumidifier is a worthy investment, as it directly tackles the root cause by pulling water from the atmosphere. Always leave space between items to ensure air can flow freely around every part of the garment.
Battling and Preventing Musty Odours
If clothes already have a slight damp smell, it's crucial to treat it, not just mask it. Adding half a cup of white vinegar or baking soda to your rinse cycle can work wonders. Both are natural odour neutralisers and have antibacterial properties. They rinse out completely, leaving your clothes smelling fresh. Ensure clothes are 100% dry before folding and storing them; check seams and waistbands, which hold onto moisture the longest. To protect your wardrobe, consider placing moisture absorbers like silica gel packets or a small cup of baking soda in your closets to combat any lingering humidity.
