The journey between India's tech capital, Bengaluru, and its favourite beach destination, Goa, is about to get faster and more scenic. A new Vande Bharat Express service approved by the Railway Board promises to cut travel time to around 13 hours.
A New Era of Connectivity
The
Railway Board has given the green light for a new Vande Bharat Express connecting Yesvantpur in Bengaluru to Madgaon in Goa. This service, expected to launch in the third week of November 2026, will operate six days a week, providing a much-needed direct daytime travel option between the two states. The journey from Yesvantpur to Madgaon is scheduled to take approximately 13 hours and 20 minutes, a significant improvement for travellers who currently face much longer transit times by rail. The return journey from Madgaon to Yesvantpur is slated to be slightly quicker, at around 12 hours and 55 minutes. This development is part of Indian Railways' broader mission to enhance connectivity and modernize its network across the country.
Route, Timings, and Stoppages
The new service, designated by train numbers 26655 (Yesvantpur-Madgaon) and 26656 (Madgaon-Yesvantpur), will run via Mangaluru Junction. The train from Yesvantpur will depart at 7:35 AM and arrive in Madgaon at 8:55 PM, operating on all days except Wednesday. In the reverse direction, the train will leave Madgaon at 8:20 AM and reach Yesvantpur at 9:15 PM, running on all days except Thursday. The route includes 12 stops, connecting several key towns in Karnataka's interior and coastal regions, including Hassan, Sakleshpur, Mangaluru Junction, Udupi, Murdeshwar, and Karwar, before reaching Goa. This will not only link the two major cities but also improve connectivity for passengers travelling to these intermediate destinations.
A Scenic Journey Through the Ghats
One of the most anticipated aspects of this new route is the journey through the Western Ghats. The section between Sakleshpur and Subrahmanya Road is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, offering passengers views of lush forests, rolling hills, and picturesque landscapes. This scenic passage is expected to transform the train ride into a memorable part of the holiday experience itself. However, for safety reasons along this ghat section, the semi-high-speed train will operate at a restricted speed of 30 kmph while navigating the 55 km stretch. Despite this, the service will still be the fastest rail link between Bengaluru and the coastal region.
Impact on Travellers and Tourism
The introduction of this Vande Bharat Express is a significant upgrade for both leisure and business travellers. It provides a direct, comfortable, and relatively fast chair-car service, eliminating the need for inconvenient changes or overnight journeys. This improved connectivity is expected to provide a major boost to tourism in both Goa and the coastal and interior parts of Karnataka. The service also replaces the existing Madgaon–Mangaluru Central Vande Bharat Express, which reportedly had low passenger numbers. By extending the route to Bengaluru, Indian Railways aims to cater to a much larger and more consistent flow of passengers. Final details on the official launch date and ticket prices are yet to be announced.
Part of a Larger Modernisation Drive
This new service is a clear example of Indian Railways' ongoing efforts to modernize its infrastructure. The project is linked to long term plans for track doubling and electrification on the Hospet–Hubballi–Vasco da Gama line, a project sanctioned back in 2010–11 to increase capacity and improve efficiency. While parts of the track–doubling project have faced delays, particularly due to environmental clearances in forest areas, the push for electrification and the introduction of modern rolling stock like the Vande Bharat rakes demonstrate a commitment to progress. These upgrades are designed to decongest high–density networks, reduce carbon emissions by switching from diesel to electric, and ultimately provide faster, more reliable services for the public.
