What Is the Chair-Stand Test?
You may have seen it online, but the 30-second chair-stand test is far from a mere social media fad. It's a well-established tool used by clinicians, physical therapists, and researchers to assess functional lower body strength, particularly in older
adults. Developed as part of the Fullerton Functional Fitness Test Battery, it measures how many times a person can stand up from a chair and sit back down in 30 seconds without using their hands. Its simplicity is its strength; it provides a reliable snapshot of a person's ability to perform essential daily movements, making it a powerful indicator of overall functional fitness.
How to Perform the Test
You only need a stable chair (without armrests, with a seat height of about 17 inches or 43 cm) and a timer. Place the chair against a wall to prevent it from sliding. Sit in the middle of the chair, with your feet flat on the floor and your back straight. Cross your arms over your chest. When you start the timer, stand up completely, then sit back down in a controlled manner. Repeat this as many times as you can in 30 seconds. Count only the full stands you complete. If you are more than halfway up when the 30 seconds are up, you can count it as a full repetition. Using your arms to push off your legs means the repetition doesn't count.
Understanding Your Score
The number of repetitions you complete is your score. While individual results vary, health organizations provide general benchmarks. According to data cited by the CDC, for men aged 60-64, a score below 14 is considered below average, while for women in the same age group, it's below 12. For those aged 70-74, below-average scores are less than 12 for men and 10 for women. These are just guidelines, but they can help you understand where your lower body strength and endurance stand relative to your peers. A lower-than-average score might indicate an increased risk of falls and a need to focus on building strength.

The test might seem simple, but it assesses a complex combination of physical attributes. Chair squats, where you practice the test's motion slowly and with control, are a great start. Other beneficial exercises include step-ups, lunges, and hip hinges, which strengthen the glutes, quadriceps, and hamstrings—the primary muscles used in the test.
