Electrolytes are minerals like sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium that carry an electric charge when dissolved in your body's fluids. They are fundamental to your performance, regulating everything from nerve function and muscle contractions to your body's fluid balance.
When you run, especially for over an hour, you lose these vital minerals through sweat. If you don't replace them, your body's internal communication system starts to falter, leading to a noticeable drop in performance. Replenishing them is not just optional for serious runners; it's critical.
Why Summer Heat Changes the Game
Running in hot and humid conditions significantly increases your sweat rate, which means you lose electrolytes much faster. Simply drinking plain water to rehydrate can actually make the problem worse by further diluting the concentration of electrolytes in your system. This can lead to a dangerous condition called hyponatremia, or low blood sodium, with symptoms like nausea, headaches, confusion, and muscle weakness. The summer heat demands a more strategic approach to hydration that includes actively replacing the specific minerals your body is losing.
Choosing Your Fuelling Tools
An electrolyte management "system" refers to the combination of products you use to maintain balance. These tools come in several convenient forms. Sports drinks offer a mix of fluids, electrolytes, and carbohydrates for energy. Powders and dissolvable tablets allow you to control the concentration in your own water bottle, which can be cost-effective. Gels and chews are portable options for topping up during a long run, though they are often more focused on carbohydrates and may need to be paired with a dedicated hydration source. Natural options like coconut water can also contribute, but often have inconsistent electrolyte levels.
Building Your Personal Strategy
There is no one-size-fits-all solution, as sweat rates and sodium loss vary greatly between individuals. A good starting point for runs over an hour is to consume a product with 300-700 mg of sodium per litre of fluid. Pay attention to how you feel. If you're a heavy or "salty" sweater (you can see white residue on your clothes after a run), you will likely need more sodium. For most runners, a plan involves starting the run well-hydrated, sipping an electrolyte drink every 15-20 minutes during the activity, and continuing to rehydrate with electrolytes and a balanced meal afterward.
Listening to Your Body
Your body provides clear signals when your electrolyte balance is off. The most common early signs are muscle cramping, spasms, fatigue, and dizziness. You might also experience a headache, nausea, or a side stitch. These are not just signs of dehydration but of mineral depletion. Ignoring these signals can lead to more severe symptoms like confusion, irregular heartbeat, and fainting.
