A New Era for Overnight Travel
The iconic Vande Bharat Express, which revolutionised daytime intercity travel, is now poised to conquer the night. Indian Railways is launching its sleeper version on key long-distance routes, with the highly anticipated Mumbai-Bengaluru service set
to begin on November 1, 2026. This marks the second Vande Bharat sleeper in the country, following the inaugural Howrah-Kamakhya service that began in January 2026. The new train aims to slash travel time between India's financial capital and its Silicon Valley from around 24 hours to just 16 hours, offering a premium, comfortable, and faster alternative for overnight passengers.
Rethinking the Sleeper Berth
At the heart of this new train is a complete reimagining of the humble berth. The design focuses squarely on passenger comfort. Berths are ergonomically engineered to be wider and feature better cushioning for improved sleep quality. Each berth is a self-contained unit, equipped with privacy curtains, a personal reading light, and dedicated charging points for both laptops and mobile phones. A significant upgrade is the inclusion of individual, automotive-style AC vents for each berth, allowing passengers to control their own airflow. The ladders for accessing the upper berths have also been redesigned to be easier and safer to climb. This thoughtful approach transforms the berth from a simple sleeping surface into a private, comfortable space for the long haul.
Beyond the Berth: A Premium Experience
The Vande Bharat sleeper's enhancements extend throughout the train. Built as a self-propelled trainset, it delivers a smoother, jerk-free ride at speeds up to 160 kmph, a noticeable improvement over conventional locomotive-hauled trains like the Rajdhani Express. The coaches are better insulated to reduce noise, creating a calmer cabin atmosphere. Passengers can expect modern, aircraft-style bio-vacuum toilets that are spacious and feature sensor-based taps and advanced odour control. First AC passengers will even have access to an onboard hot shower. The train also features automatic doors, CCTV surveillance, GPS-based information screens, and the Kavach anti-collision safety system, ensuring a secure and modern journey from start to finish.
Configuration and Capacity
The 16-coach train is designed to carry 823 passengers across three classes. The configuration includes one First AC coach with 24 berths, four AC 2-Tier coaches with a total of 188 berths, and eleven AC 3-Tier coaches accommodating 611 passengers. This composition allows for a range of price points and comfort levels, catering to both business and leisure travellers. The train will also feature a modern pantry car to manage IRCTC's meal services, which are often tailored to regional tastes. The exterior, with its aerodynamic front inspired by the 'prowess of eagles', signals a clear departure from the designs of the past, reinforcing the train's premium positioning.
Route, Timings, and What to Expect
The inaugural run of the Bengaluru-Mumbai Vande Bharat sleeper is slated for November 1, 2026, to coincide with Karnataka Rajyotsava. Proposed timings suggest a 10 PM departure from KSR Bengaluru, arriving at Mumbai CSMT at 2:50 PM the next day. The return journey would depart CSMT at 10:30 PM and reach Bengaluru at 2:50 PM. Key stops along the planned route include Pune, Solapur, and Kalaburagi, connecting major hubs in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. While fares are yet to be officially finalised, initial estimates suggest a price range between ₹2,600 and ₹4,250 depending on the class, positioning it as a premium service competitive with other long-distance options.
