Traction Is Your Top Priority
When exercising in the rain, your primary concern should be grip. A wet surface, whether it's pavement or a muddy trail, dramatically reduces friction. The key to safe footing lies in the shoe's outsole—the rubbery bottom layer that makes contact with
the ground. Look for shoes with outsoles made from sticky or soft rubber compounds, which provide better grip on wet surfaces than harder, more durable rubber. The design of the tread, known as lugs, is also crucial. The depth, shape, and spacing of these lugs determine how well the shoe can bite into the ground and prevent you from sliding.
For Road Warriors on Wet Pavement
Running or exercising on asphalt and concrete presents a unique challenge when wet. These surfaces become slick, especially with the added film of road oils. For these conditions, you don't need the deep, aggressive lugs of a trail shoe. In fact, those can feel unstable on flat ground. Instead, look for road-running shoes with a high-contact, flatter outsole that features many smaller, shallower lugs. This design increases the surface area touching the pavement, improving grip. Many road shoes designed for wet weather also incorporate special rubber compounds specifically formulated for traction on wet pavement. An added bonus to look for is reflective detailing, which increases your visibility to traffic on grey, drizzly days.
For Trail Trekkers in the Mud
Off-road surfaces like dirt paths, grassy fields, and rocky trails become unpredictable when soaked. Here, aggressive traction is non-negotiable. Trail-running shoes are specifically built for this, featuring deep, widely-spaced lugs on the outsole. These prominent lugs dig into soft earth, mud, and wet leaves to provide stable footing where a road shoe would slide. The rubber is often softer to grip wet rocks and roots. Beyond traction, trail shoes offer more protection. They typically have reinforced uppers to guard against scrapes from rocks and branches, and some include a 'rock plate'—a firm plate in the midsole to block sharp objects from poking through to your foot.
The Great Waterproofing Debate
It seems logical to reach for waterproof shoes, often lined with a membrane like GORE-TEX (GTX), when it's raining. These shoes are excellent at keeping water from rain and puddles out. However, they have a significant downside: breathability. Waterproof membranes work both ways; while they block water from getting in, they also trap sweat and heat inside. If water does happen to get in over the ankle cuff, it has no way to drain out, leaving you with a heavy, waterlogged shoe. For shorter runs in light rain, a more breathable, non-waterproof shoe made of quick-drying mesh might be more comfortable. For long excursions in heavy rain or slushy conditions, the protection of a waterproof shoe often wins out.
Beyond Running: Other Outdoor Workouts
If your rainy-day routine involves more than just running, such as a bootcamp in the park with side-to-side movements, jumps, and lunges, your footwear needs change slightly. While grip is still paramount, you should also prioritize lateral stability. Look for a cross-training or trail shoe with a structured upper that locks your foot in place to prevent it from sliding around inside the shoe during multi-directional movements. A stable base and a secure fit will reduce the risk of rolling an ankle on slick grass or uneven ground. Avoid shoes with extremely high, soft cushioning, as they can feel wobbly and unstable during agility drills.
