national parks with a combination of rail and a short road journey. For instance, the Vande Bharat to Sawai Madhopur Junction provides excellent access to Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan. Similarly, travellers can take a train to Veraval to visit Gir National Park, the home of the Asiatic lion in Gujarat. Other accessible parks include Bandipur via Mysuru station, Jim Corbett via Dehradun, and Kaziranga via Guwahati, opening up incredible opportunities for weekend getaways and planned wildlife holidays.
Verify the 'Last-Mile' Connectivity
The most crucial step is planning the journey from the railway station to the national park itself. Vande Bharat trains get you to the nearest major station, but they don't stop at the park gates. For example, after reaching Mysuru, Bandipur National Park is still an 80-kilometre road trip that takes about two hours. From Guwahati station, Kaziranga is a four to five-hour drive. Before booking your train, investigate the availability of taxis, local buses, or pre-booked transfers. Check prices and travel time, especially if your train arrives late at night. Some resorts offer station pickups, which can be a convenient, albeit more expensive, option. Don't let the final leg of your journey become an unexpected hurdle.
Align Train Timings with Park Rules
A successful wildlife trip is all about timing. Jungle safaris typically operate in two main slots: early morning and late afternoon. Carefully check your Vande Bharat train's arrival and departure times. Will you arrive in time to check into your hotel and catch the afternoon safari? If you plan to leave after a morning safari, is there enough of a buffer to reach the station for your train? An overnight stay near the park is almost always necessary. Factoring in hotel check-in/check-out times along with the travel time to and from the station is essential for a stress-free itinerary.
Secure Safari Permits Before Anything Else
This is a non-negotiable rule for popular parks: a train ticket does not guarantee a safari. Most national parks, especially top tiger reserves like Ranthambore, have a stringent, limited number of safari permits (for both jeep and canter vehicles) that are booked online months in advance. These permits sell out incredibly fast. Your first step, even before looking at train schedules, should be to visit the official forest department website for the park you intend to visit. Check the safari booking window, understand the different zones, and secure your permit. Only once you have a confirmed safari booking should you proceed to book your travel and accommodation.
Confirm Accommodation Availability
Just like safari permits, places to stay near national parks can be limited and fill up quickly, particularly during peak season (typically October to June) and on long weekends. Accommodation can range from government-run forest rest houses to budget hotels and luxury resorts. Their availability often dictates the feasibility of a trip. Before you commit to non-refundable train tickets, ensure you have a confirmed booking for your stay. Waiting until you arrive to find a room is a risky strategy in these often-remote locations, where options are fewer and more spread out than in a major city.
