The Coastal Carbon Superheroes
Coastal ecosystems like mangroves, tidal marshes, and seagrass meadows are incredibly effective at capturing and storing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This stored carbon is known as 'blue carbon'. These habitats might be small in area compared to forests,
but they sequester carbon at a much faster rate, locking it away in the waterlogged soil beneath them for potentially thousands of years. Think of them as natural superheroes in the fight against climate change, quietly burying vast amounts of carbon where it can't contribute to global warming.
Erosion: The Great Disrupter
Erosion, driven by rising sea levels, stronger storms, and human development, is literally washing these vital ecosystems away. When coastal land crumbles into the sea, the story is more complex than just losing ground. The process disturbs the soil and sediment where millennia of carbon has been safely stored. Instead of remaining locked away, this ancient carbon is released. A recent NASA-supported study found that coastal marshes along the U.S. Gulf and Atlantic coasts are releasing massive amounts of carbon into the ocean each year due to erosion. This turns a reliable carbon sink into a potential carbon source.
From Sink to Source: A Worrisome Shift
The carbon released by erosion doesn't always go directly into the atmosphere as CO2. Much of it enters the ocean. However, this disturbs the ocean's own delicate carbon balance. When these ecosystems are degraded or destroyed, their capacity to absorb carbon is lost, and the stored carbon can be released back into the cycle. This creates a dangerous feedback loop: climate change drives erosion, and erosion can release more carbon, further accelerating climate change. Some studies suggest that as mangroves, for instance, are drowned by rising seas, they could switch from being net absorbers of carbon to net emitters.
Why This Matters for India
With over 7,500 kilometres of coastline, India is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of coastal erosion. Its extensive mangrove forests, like the Sundarbans, are among the world's most significant blue carbon sinks. As these coastlines face pressure from sea-level rise and development, the risk of unleashing stored carbon is immense. Protecting and restoring these coastal habitats is not just about defending coastal communities from storms and flooding; it is a critical climate action. Maintaining the integrity of these ecosystems ensures they continue their silent, vital work of sequestering carbon, a service that is essential for the entire planet.
