In a significant policy update, Saudi Arabia has made obtaining a tourist e-visa more accessible for Indian citizens. Previously, India was not on the list of countries eligible for a direct, standalone tourist e-visa. The new system, often called the 'Package
Visa', integrates the visa application process directly into the booking of a travel package. This means that when Indian travellers book their flights and accommodation through specific, approved travel platforms, the tourist e-visa is included as part of the bundle. This initiative is a clear signal of the Kingdom's focus on attracting leisure travellers from India, a key market in its ambitious tourism strategy.
How the Package Visa System Works
The process is designed to be seamless. Travellers must use one of the accredited online travel partners, such as Almosafer, Webook, or Reserval. The procedure typically involves selecting a pre-designed package or customising one that includes flights and hotels. During the booking process, applicants upload a copy of their passport and a personal photograph. After completing the payment for the package, an automated system verifies the information and processes the e-visa, which is then sent electronically to the applicant. This removes the need for a separate, often lengthy, visa application at an embassy or consulate.
Key Requirements and Conditions
There are specific conditions attached to this new visa route. The travel package must include a return flight and a stay at a hotel with a minimum four-star rating licensed by the Saudi Ministry of Tourism. The trip duration must be between two and 88 days, and bookings need to be made at least 48 hours before departure. It is important to note that this visa is tied to the dates and arrangements of the specific package booked. This differs from a standard tourist visa, which typically allows more independent travel planning. The system is currently available exclusively to citizens of seven countries, with India being a primary focus.
