A Major Boost for Inbound Travel
The Ministry of Home Affairs has announced a significant expansion of its electronic visa program, making the country more accessible than ever. With the addition of two airports and nine land border crossings, the total number of authorised entry points
for e-visa holders has now increased to 88. This network includes 37 airports, 38 seaports, and 13 land ports, offering unprecedented flexibility for tourists, business travellers, and those seeking medical care in India. The expansion is part of an ongoing effort to simplify India's visa regime, which has seen the e-visa facility grow from serving 43 countries in 2014 to 172 countries today. Officials noted that the move enhances the attractiveness and utility of the electronic visa system.
The New Gateways to India
The 11 new entry points open up direct access to several key regions. The two newly added airports are Bhopal Airport in Madhya Pradesh, offering a gateway to the heart of central India, and Tirupati Airport in Andhra Pradesh, a major hub for pilgrims. The nine new land ports are primarily located in the east and northeast, facilitating overland travel from neighbouring countries. These include Agartala, Darranga, Gede, Ghojadanga, Haridaspur, Jaigaon, Dawki, Moreh, and the Attari road crossing. This development is particularly beneficial for travellers looking to explore regions beyond the major metropolitan hubs, allowing for more diverse and convenient itineraries.
Understanding India's E-Visa System
The Indian e-visa is an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) that allows citizens of eligible countries to apply for a visa online before their trip. This removes the need to visit an Indian embassy or consulate. The system covers a wide range of travel purposes, with 17 sub-categories including tourism, business, medical visits, conferences, and even mountaineering. The passport used for the application must have at least six months of validity from the date of arrival in India. According to the government, the system is highly efficient, with approximately 95% of e-visa applications processed within 72 hours. It's important to remember that an e-visa is only valid for entry through designated ports, so travellers must ensure their point of arrival is on the approved list.
How to Apply for Your E-Visa
The application process is designed to be straightforward and is completed entirely online. First, applicants should visit the official Government of India e-visa website (indianvisaonline.gov.in). There, you will need to fill out the application form with your personal details, passport information, and travel plans. You will also be required to upload a recent photograph and a scanned copy of your passport's information page. After submitting the form, you must pay the required visa fee online using a credit card, debit card, or payment wallet. Once the application is processed and approved, the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) will be sent to your registered email address. You should print a copy of this ETA to present to immigration officials upon your arrival in India.
What This Means for Your Travel Plans
This expansion provides travellers with greater freedom and flexibility. The addition of Tirupati Airport, for instance, provides direct e-visa access for pilgrims visiting one of the world's most frequented religious sites. Similarly, the inclusion of Bhopal opens up easier travel to the heritage sites of central India. The new land border crossings in the Northeast are a boon for regional and overland travellers, potentially boosting tourism in states like Meghalaya, Tripura, and Manipur by improving connectivity with Bangladesh and Myanmar. This move signals a clear intention to distribute tourist traffic more widely across the country, encouraging visitors to explore beyond the traditional golden triangle.
