Why the Change is Happening Now
The current Passenger Reservation System (PRS), the digital backbone of Indian Railways, has been in operation since 1986. While it revolutionised ticketing in its time, the four-decade-old system was not built for the modern era of internet booking.
Today, a staggering 89% of all reserved tickets are purchased online, putting immense pressure on the legacy infrastructure. This surge in demand, especially during peak hours like the Tatkal window, often leads to system slowdowns and booking failures. To address this, the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) has developed a next-generation, cloud-based platform to deliver a faster, more reliable service.
Understanding the 'Transition Phase'
The upgrade, which officially kicks off in August, will not be a sudden switch. Instead, Indian Railways is opting for a phased migration to prevent major disruptions for passengers. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has specifically instructed officials to ensure the transition is seamless and that travellers face no inconvenience. This gradual rollout means that trains will be moved to the new system progressively. The new system will be tested under varying traffic loads to ensure stability before the old PRS is completely phased out. An early version of the new system has already been tested via a new IRCTC beta website launched in July 2026, which has shown promising improvements in booking speeds.
A Leap in Capacity and Speed
The most significant improvement passengers will notice is a massive increase in capacity. The new system is designed to handle over 1.5 lakh (150,000) ticket bookings per minute, a nearly five-fold increase from the current capacity of around 32,000 tickets. This enhancement is expected to make the high-stress Tatkal booking experience much smoother. Furthermore, the system’s ability to handle passenger enquiries—such as checking PNR status or seat availability—will see a tenfold jump, from 4 lakh to over 40 lakh enquiries per minute. This means faster responses and a less frustrating user experience across the board.
Smarter Features for Travellers
Beyond raw power, the new PRS brings smarter, more user-friendly features. One of the highlights is an improved AI-powered waitlist prediction tool. The Railways reports that the accuracy of this feature, which helps passengers gauge the likelihood of a waitlisted ticket getting confirmed, has already improved to 94%. The upgraded platform will also feature a multilingual interface, making it more accessible to users across the country. These intelligent additions are aimed at making the entire process of planning and booking a train journey more transparent and predictable for millions of daily users.
What Passengers Should Keep in Mind
Given the phased and carefully managed nature of the rollout, passengers are not required to take any special action. The primary focus for travellers should be awareness. As different services and trains are migrated to the new system throughout August and the following months, you can expect a progressively faster and more stable booking experience. While the goal is a seamless transition, it's always wise to be patient during any major system upgrade. The long-term benefits of this overhaul—from faster bookings to fewer crashes and more intelligent features—are designed to fundamentally improve one of the world's largest public transport networks.
