Alliance Air's new service from Delhi to Daman is a significant leap forward for regional connectivity. Previously, reaching the coastal union territory from the capital involved a lengthy train journey or a flight to a nearby city like Surat followed
by a multi-hour road trip. Launched under the government's UDAN scheme, the direct flight slashes the door-to-door travel time, turning a 15-hour ordeal into a manageable few hours. Operating twice a week, this flight, which takes about three hours, opens up Daman's Portuguese-era forts and serene beaches to tourists and streamlines travel for business people heading to one of western India's key manufacturing hubs. This strategic route is poised to boost both tourism and economic activity in the region.
The Last-Mile Hurdle
The convenience of flying directly into Daman's NAMO Airport, however, comes with a caveat. The airport is not situated directly within the main tourist or commercial zones. Travellers need to account for a second leg of their journey via ground transportation to reach their final destination, whether it's a hotel in Daman, an industrial estate in Vapi, or a resort in Silvassa. The availability, cost, and time required for these transfers are critical factors that can significantly alter the overall travel equation. For many, especially business travellers and families, this 'last-mile' connectivity can make or break the experience.
Breaking Down the Ground Options
Once you land, your primary options are taxis and auto-rickshaws, with several local operators and app-based services available. For those staying within Daman itself, the journey is relatively short. A trip to the popular areas of Nani Daman or Moti Daman, roughly 5-10 km away, will likely take around 20-30 minutes. However, many visitors are destined for the surrounding industrial towns. Vapi in Gujarat, a major business hub, is about 12-15 km away. A taxi to Vapi can cost anywhere from ₹950 to ₹1,200 and take 30 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic. For travellers heading to Silvassa, the capital of the neighbouring Dadra and Nagar Haveli territory, the journey is more substantial. At approximately 30 km from the airport, a taxi ride to Silvassa can take over an hour and set you back ₹1,500 or more. While these services are readily available, pre-booking is often recommended to avoid delays and ensure transparent pricing.
Is the Direct Flight Worth It?
The answer depends on your priorities. For time-sensitive business travellers heading to Vapi, the direct flight is almost certainly a winner. Even with a ₹1,000 taxi fare, the time saved compared to flying to Mumbai or Surat and then driving for several hours is invaluable. For tourists, the calculation is more nuanced. A family of four flying to Daman could spend an additional ₹1,500 on a taxi to Silvassa, adding a significant amount to their trip budget. This cost must be weighed against the convenience of avoiding a long train ride. The flight, with fares around ₹7,000, offers significant value by cutting down transit time, but that value diminishes slightly with every kilometre and rupee spent on the ground. Travellers who were previously deterred by the 15-hour train journey will find the flight a game-changer, but those who used to fly to Surat and enjoy the scenic drive might find the new route's overall cost comparable when factoring in the final transfer.
