Secure Your Belongings, Secure Your Peace of Mind
Luggage safety is a primary concern on any overnight journey. In a bustling sleeper coach, it's wise to be proactive. The most essential items are a sturdy lock and a metal chain, which you can find at most hardware stores or even at major railway stations.
Use this to tether your main suitcase or backpack to the metal loops found under the lower berths. This simple step is a powerful deterrent against grab-and-run theft while you sleep. For your valuables like your phone, wallet, and documents, avoid stashing them in your main luggage. Instead, keep them in a small daypack or a waist pouch that you can use as a pillow or keep close to your body. Sleeping with your head towards the window, away from the aisle, also adds a layer of security.
Craft a Comfortable Sleep Sanctuary
Sleeper class does not include bedding, so you need to bring your own. A lightweight blanket or a shawl is crucial, as the open windows can make nights surprisingly chilly, even in warmer months. A travel pillow, preferably an inflatable or memory foam one, will save you from a stiff neck and make a world of difference to your sleep quality. To truly create a zone of peace, an eye mask and a pair of earplugs are non-negotiable. They will block out the sudden cabin lights at stations and the inevitable chorus of snores and chatter, helping you get some genuine rest.
Master Onboard Hygiene and Freshness
Staying fresh on a long journey can be a challenge, but a few key items can make it manageable. A packet of wet wipes is your best friend for a quick refresh of your face and hands. Carry a small bottle of hand sanitiser and use it frequently, especially before eating. Since train toilets may not always be stocked, it's essential to bring your own toilet paper or tissues. It's also a good idea to pack a small, quick-dry towel. For dental hygiene, travel-sized toothpaste and a toothbrush are obvious, but a small bottle of mouthwash is a great hack for when you need a quick freshen-up without the hassle.
Stay Powered and Entertained
While many coaches have charging points, they are often in high demand or may not work. A fully charged power bank is an absolute lifesaver, ensuring your phone stays on for communication, navigation, and entertainment. Before you board, download a few movies, podcasts, or a new playlist to your device. A good pair of headphones is considerate to your fellow passengers and helps you tune out your surroundings. And don't forget the basics: your charging cable and a multi-port adapter if you're travelling with multiple gadgets.
Smart Snacking and Hydration
While you can often buy food on the train or at stations, it's always a good idea to carry your own supplies. Pack non-perishable snacks like biscuits, nuts, dry fruits, or energy bars to keep hunger at bay. For hydration, carry a reusable water bottle that you can refill at stations. This is more economical and environmentally friendly than buying multiple plastic bottles. Eating dinner before you board or packing a light home-cooked meal can also be a great option for the first night. Avoid accepting food from strangers as a general safety precaution.
