The Glass-Encased Marvel
The star of this journey is undoubtedly the Vistadome coach, a specially designed carriage attached to the Visakhapatnam-Kirandul passenger train. Unlike conventional coaches, the Vistadome is engineered for sightseeing. It features oversized glass windows
that offer sprawling, unobstructed views of the passing landscape. The most talked-about feature is the glass-domed roof, which provides a panoramic perspective of the hills and sky above. Inside, the experience is elevated by plush, 360-degree rotating seats, allowing travellers to turn towards the best views without leaving their spot. This air-conditioned coach ensures a comfortable journey, shielded from the elements while providing a front-row seat to nature's dramatic monsoon performance.
A Journey Through Tunnels and Valleys
The train route from the coastal city of Visakhapatnam to the hills of Araku is an engineering feat in itself. Covering approximately 115 kilometres, the journey takes around four to five hours as it ascends through the Eastern Ghats. The ride is a rhythmic passage through 58 tunnels and over 84 bridges, creating a thrilling interplay of light and shadow. As the train snakes its way up the hills, the scenery transforms from urban plains to dense, green valleys. The monsoon breathes life into the landscape, with countless seasonal waterfalls appearing, cascading down mountainsides, often right at the exit of a tunnel. The lush greenery and misty atmosphere make the journey feel like a passage through a different world.
Why the Monsoon is Magical
While Araku Valley is a year-round destination, the monsoon season, from June to September, offers an unparalleled experience. The rain washes the landscape, leaving behind a vibrant tapestry of deep greens. The hills are often shrouded in low-hanging clouds and mist, creating a mystical and romantic ambience. Waterfalls that are mere trickles in other seasons become powerful torrents, adding to the visual spectacle. For photographers and nature lovers, this season provides the most dramatic and picturesque views. The glass roof of the Vistadome coach takes on a special significance, as you can watch the rain fall while surrounded by the verdant beauty of the Ghats.
Planning Your Vistadome Trip
Booking a seat on the Vistadome coach requires some planning due to its high demand, especially during peak seasons and weekends. Tickets can be booked through the official IRCTC website or app. Search for trains from Visakhapatnam (VSKP) to Araku (ARKU) and look for the executive class (EV) coach on the Visakhapatnam-Kirandul Passenger (Train number 08551). It's highly recommended to book well in advance, as reservations open 120 days prior to the travel date. The train typically departs from Visakhapatnam in the early morning, around 6:45 AM, reaching Araku by 11:00 AM, making it suitable for a day trip or an extended stay.
Exploring Araku and Beyond
The journey doesn't end when the train pulls into Araku station. The valley itself is home to numerous attractions. You can explore the famous Borra Caves, a stunning network of million-year-old limestone formations. The region is also known for its coffee plantations, where you can learn about the local coffee cultivation and sample fresh brews. Other points of interest include the Tribal Museum, which offers insights into the lives of the local communities, and various viewpoints like Galikonda that offer stunning panoramas of the valley. Many travellers opt for a popular itinerary: take the scenic train journey up to Araku and return by road to cover attractions like the Borra Caves, which are more accessible by car on the way back.
