The Blanket Ban on 'Seed Oils'
The internet has declared war on seed oils. The prevailing argument is that oils extracted from seeds like corn, soybean, safflower, and sunflower are a primary driver of modern health issues. The case against them usually centres on two main points:
they are heavily processed using high heat and chemical solvents, and they contain high levels of omega-6 fatty acids. The concern is that modern diets have an imbalanced omega-6 to omega-3 ratio, which many believe promotes chronic inflammation. This has led to a widespread, absolute verdict—avoid all seed oils, always. While the concerns about ultra-processed foods are valid, the argument that all seed oils are uniformly harmful is an oversimplification that causes more confusion than clarity.
Not All Oils Are Created Equal
The fundamental flaw in the viral narrative is treating 'seed oil' as a single entity. The reality is that this category includes a vast range of products with hugely different nutritional profiles and production methods. For instance, highly refined soybean oil, often extracted with the chemical solvent hexane and then heated and deodorized, is a world away from cold-pressed flaxseed oil. The former is high in omega-6 and stripped of many nutrients, while the latter is a rich source of plant-based omega-3 fatty acids, which are known to have anti-inflammatory properties. Lumping them together is like saying all carbohydrates are the same, ignoring the difference between a whole grain and a spoonful of sugar. The processing method is arguably more important than the source itself. Cold-pressed oils are extracted mechanically without high heat, preserving more of their natural vitamins, antioxidants, and flavour. Refined oils, on the other hand, are processed to have a neutral flavour and a higher smoke point, but this often comes at the cost of their nutritional value.
A Smarter Way to Evaluate Oils
Instead of a blanket ban, a more nuanced approach is to evaluate each oil individually based on a few key criteria. First, consider the fatty acid profile. While an excess of omega-6 is a valid concern, not all omega-6 is inherently bad; it is an essential fatty acid. The issue is often a deficiency of omega-3s, not just a surplus of omega-6s. Oils like flaxseed and canola offer a better balance. Second, look at the processing method. Whenever possible, opt for oils labelled 'cold-pressed' or 'expeller-pressed', especially for dressings and low-heat cooking. These methods retain more of the seed's original nutrients. Third, consider the use. An oil's smoke point—the temperature at which it begins to break down and smoke—is critical. Delicate, unrefined oils like flaxseed oil are best for cold uses like salad dressings, while oils with higher smoke points are better suited for cooking. Using an oil above its smoke point can create harmful compounds.
Spotlight on the 'Minor' Players
Many beneficial oils get lost in the anti-seed-oil shuffle. Pumpkin seed oil, for example, has a balanced fatty acid profile and is rich in antioxidants. It has a nutty flavour perfect for drizzling over finished dishes. Flaxseed oil is one of the best plant-based sources of ALA, a type of omega-3 fatty acid. Its high omega-3 content makes it a valuable addition to a diet, especially for those who don't eat fish. Sesame oil, another 'minor' seed oil, is rich in antioxidants and has been a staple in Asian cuisine for centuries. These oils demonstrate that looking beyond the eight or so mass-market refined oils reveals a world of flavour and nutrition. By judging each oil on its own merits—its fatty acid profile, its processing, and its intended use—we can make informed choices instead of following a fear-based trend.
