Why Vietnam? Why Now?
For years, Vietnam was known more for its incredible history, bustling cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, and world-famous cuisine. But its 3,000-kilometre coastline has quietly been developing into a world-class beach destination. So, why the sudden
buzz? It's a perfect storm of factors. First, affordability. Your rupee goes a lot further here compared to other popular spots in Southeast Asia, from five-star resorts to delicious street food. Second, accessibility has dramatically improved, with direct flights from major Indian cities to Vietnam. Finally, the introduction of a simple e-visa process for Indian citizens has made planning a trip easier than ever. It offers the perfect blend of exotic adventure without feeling overcrowded… yet.
1. Da Nang: The All-Rounder
If you want a destination that has it all, Da Nang is your answer. It's often the first port of call for Indian tourists, and for good reason. My Khe Beach, with its long stretch of soft white sand and gentle waves, is perfect for morning jogs and sunset cocktails. But Da Nang is more than just a beach city. It’s the gateway to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the charming ancient town of Hoi An, the imperial city of Hue, and the My Son Sanctuary. Plus, it’s home to the iconic Golden Bridge held up by two giant stone hands—a selfie you’ve definitely seen on your Instagram feed. The city itself is modern, clean, and boasts a fantastic food scene, from fresh seafood to the local speciality, Mi Quang (turmeric noodles).
2. Phu Quoc: The Island Paradise
Known as the “Pearl Island,” Phu Quoc is Vietnam’s answer to Phuket or Koh Samui, but with a more laid-back vibe. Located in the Gulf of Thailand, this island is a haven for those looking to truly unplug. Its biggest draw for Indian travellers is the special visa policy: you can visit Phu Quoc for up to 30 days completely visa-free, as long as you fly directly to the island or transit through another Vietnamese airport without leaving the transit zone. The island is famous for its luxurious resorts, stunning Sao Beach (often called one of the world's most beautiful), and the world’s longest over-sea cable car, which offers breathtaking views of the archipelago. Don't leave without visiting a pepper farm or a fish sauce factory, the island's most famous exports.
3. Nha Trang: The Energetic Coastal City
If your idea of a beach holiday includes a buzzing nightlife and plenty of action, Nha Trang is the place to be. This is a city that loves to have fun. The main beach is a crescent-shaped bay set against a backdrop of skyscrapers and mountains, offering everything from parasailing and jet-skiing to beachside massages. The real treasure, however, lies in the surrounding islands. You can easily book a boat tour for a day of snorkelling, diving, and exploring the crystal-clear waters of the Hon Mun Marine Protected Area. By night, the city comes alive with rooftop bars, lively clubs, and a sprawling night market perfect for souvenir hunting and sampling local delicacies.
4. Mui Ne: The Desert by the Sea
For a truly unique coastal experience, head to Mui Ne. This destination offers something you won’t find elsewhere in Southeast Asia: giant sand dunes right next to the ocean. You can go quad-biking on the vast White Dunes or slide down the red-hued slopes of the Red Dunes at sunset for an unforgettable experience. Mui Ne is also the kitesurfing and windsurfing capital of Vietnam, thanks to its consistent winds. The vibe here is less about sprawling resorts and more about boutique guesthouses and a chilled-out, sporty atmosphere. A walk through the magical “Fairy Stream,” a shallow stream that winds through a canyon of red and white sandstone, is another must-do activity that feels otherworldly.
