The festive season is in full swing, and while Indians are opening their wallets, a significant shift is underway. This year, it's not just about spending, but about smart spending. So, why has 'value-for-money' become the mantra for 2026?
The Rise of the Conscious Consumer
This festive
season, a new kind of shopper is taking centre stage: the conscious consumer. This isn't about finding the cheapest option, but the smartest one. A recent YouGov India report highlights this trend, noting that 26% of consumers plan to stick to their budget by shopping more carefully. Another 23% are actively cutting back on non-essential purchases. This behaviour marks a move away from pure impulse buying towards more deliberate decision-making. Shoppers are armed with information, comparing prices online, reading reviews, and seeking products that offer durability and utility. The goal is to maximise every rupee spent, ensuring that purchases are not just celebratory but also sensible and long-lasting.
Economic Headwinds and Household Budgets
Lingering economic pressures are a major factor shaping this year's shopping habits. With retail inflation climbing to 5.54% in September and the RBI increasing interest rates, household budgets are feeling the squeeze. A survey by LocalCircles projected that total festive spending by urban households might see a 6% dip compared to last year, falling from ₹2.10 lakh crore to ₹1.97 lakh crore. This caution is a direct response to rising living costs. Consumers are still participating in the festive spirit, particularly in categories like clothing and fashion, but they are doing so with a sharper eye on their finances. Many are dipping into savings to fund their purchases, making them even more determined to get the best possible value.
Digital Empowerment and the Deal Hunter
The digital marketplace has become the ultimate tool for the value-conscious shopper. E-commerce platforms like Amazon and Flipkart have seen explosive growth, especially from non-metro areas which now account for about 60-70% of demand. This boom is fuelled by the ease of comparing products and prices, accessing a wider variety of goods, and taking advantage of online-exclusive deals. Furthermore, flexible payment options are playing a huge role. Reports from the initial sales period show a massive uptake in Equated Monthly Instalment (EMI) plans, with nearly one in two customers on Amazon opting for them. These tools empower consumers to make bigger purchases without immediate financial strain, but also encourage a calculated approach to spending.
How Brands Are Responding
Retailers and brands are taking note of this shift. The focus is increasingly on a 'value' proposition that goes beyond low prices. For instance, in fashion, products priced below ₹500 have emerged as the fastestest growing segment online. In electronics, while premium products are still selling, there's a strong emphasis on feature rich models that offer longevity. Even in the quick commerce space, a recent survey found that 71% of users prioritise the best price or overall value over delivery speed. Companies are responding with bundled offers, extended warranties, and by highlighting the durability and multi functionality of their products. This pivot shows that brands understand the modern Indian consumer is looking for a partner in smart consumption, not just a seller.
A Trend Beyond the Festive Season
While the festive season has amplified the demand for value for money products, this trend is not a temporary phenomenon. It reflects a maturing consumer base that is more informed, financially prudent, and digitally savvy than ever before. The habits being formed now—of thorough research, price comparison, and prioritising quality and utility—are likely to persist. Gen Z consumers, in particular, are blending traditional festive spending with a personal quest for wellness and self expression, often seeking out healthy snack options or self gifting. This indicates a deeper behavioural change where 'value' is defined not just by cost, but by how well a product aligns with a consumer's lifestyle and long term goals.
