More Than Just a Remedy
Before it became a trending wellness drink, kadha was simply a part of life. This aromatic, spiced decoction is a staple of Ayurvedic home remedies, a warm hug in a mug passed down from our grandmothers. Each family has its own treasured recipe, a carefully
guarded blend of herbs and spices simmered in water. During the rainy season, when the damp weather brings a host of coughs, colds, and flu, the kitchen transforms into a small apothecary. The gentle bubbling of a pot of kadha on the stove is a familiar and comforting sound, promising relief and warmth against the chilly, damp air. It’s a ritual of self-care, a simple way to harness the power of nature to support our well-being.
The Classic Tulsi-Ginger Kadha
This is the quintessential kadha, the one most of us grew up with. It's simple, effective, and uses ingredients readily available in any Indian kitchen. Tulsi, or Holy Basil, is revered in Ayurveda for its immunity-supporting properties, while ginger is a powerhouse known for its anti-inflammatory and throat-soothing abilities. **Ingredients:** - 1-inch piece of fresh ginger, grated or crushed - 8-10 fresh tulsi leaves - 4-5 black peppercorns, coarsely crushed - 2 cups of water - 1-2 teaspoons of honey or jaggery (optional, for taste) **Method:** 1. In a saucepan, combine the water, grated ginger, tulsi leaves, and crushed peppercorns. 2. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat. 3. Reduce the heat and let it simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until the water reduces to about half its original quantity. 4. Strain the liquid into a cup. If using, stir in honey or jaggery until it dissolves. Serve hot.
Golden Turmeric & Pepper Kadha
Harnessing the power of 'haldi,' this kadha is a potent anti-inflammatory brew. Turmeric contains curcumin, a compound celebrated for its health benefits. The magic ingredient here is black pepper; its piperine content significantly boosts the body's ability to absorb curcumin, making this a powerful combination, especially for fighting seasonal sniffles and body aches. **Ingredients:** - 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder or 1-inch fresh turmeric, grated - 1/4 teaspoon black pepper powder - 1 small stick of cinnamon (dalchini) - 2 cups of water - A squeeze of lemon juice (optional) - 1 teaspoon of honey (optional) **Method:** 1. Pour the water into a pot and add the turmeric, black pepper, and cinnamon stick. 2. Let the mixture boil, then reduce to a simmer for about 10 minutes. The colour will deepen into a rich, golden hue. 3. Strain the kadha into your favourite mug. 4. Add a squeeze of lemon and a spoonful of honey for flavour and an extra dose of Vitamin C. Enjoy it while it's warm.
Soothing Ajwain & Clove Kadha
This particular blend is an excellent digestive aid and is traditionally used to relieve persistent coughs and chest congestion. Ajwain (carom seeds) is known for its ability to relieve indigestion and bloating, while cloves (laung) act as a natural expectorant, helping to clear mucus. This kadha has a strong, pungent aroma that instantly feels clearing. **Ingredients:** - 1 teaspoon ajwain (carom seeds) - 4-5 cloves (laung) - A pinch of rock salt (kala namak), optional - 2 cups of water **Method:** 1. Lightly roast the ajwain seeds in a dry pan for 30 seconds until they become fragrant. This step is optional but enhances the flavour. 2. Add the water, roasted ajwain, and cloves to a saucepan. 3. Bring to a boil and then simmer for 10-12 minutes until the concoction is reduced and aromatic. 4. Strain and add a pinch of rock salt if desired. This kadha is best consumed warm, especially before bedtime to soothe a cough.
