Indian citizens have two primary ways to enter Georgia for tourism. The most common route is applying for an e-Visa through the official government portal. This is a fully online process that replaces the need for embassy visits. The second route is a visa-free
entry option available to a specific group of travellers. It is crucial to determine which path applies to you before making any travel arrangements. Georgia does not offer a visa on arrival for Indian passport holders, so securing your entry permit in advance is mandatory.
The Visa-Free Shortcut
Before you start an e-Visa application, check if you qualify for visa-free entry. Indian passport holders who have a valid visa or residence permit from a number of countries can enter Georgia without a separate Georgian visa and stay for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. These qualifying countries include the USA, the United Kingdom, Schengen Area member states, Canada, Japan, Australia, and GCC countries like the UAE. If you hold a valid visa for any of these places, you can skip the e-Visa process entirely, saving both time and money. Your qualifying visa must be valid on the day you enter Georgia.
The E-Visa Application Process
If you don't qualify for visa-free entry, the e-Visa is your ticket in. The application is handled exclusively through the official Georgian e-Visa portal at evisa.gov.ge. The process involves filling out an online form with personal and travel details, uploading digital copies of your documents, and paying the fee by card. The standard fee is approximately USD 20, plus a small service charge. The entire process is designed to be completed from home without any need to visit a consulate.
Your Document Checklist
Preparation is key for a smooth application. Before you start, gather all necessary documents in digital format. Key documents include a scanned copy of your passport, which must be valid for at least three months beyond your intended stay and have at least two blank pages. You will also need a recent passport-sized photograph, proof of accommodation (hotel bookings), confirmed round-trip flight tickets, and proof of sufficient funds, usually in the form of bank statements from the last three months. Crucially, all travellers must have valid travel and health insurance for the entire duration of their stay.
Processing Time and Visa Details
Once you submit your application and pay the fee, the processing time is typically around five to six working days. However, it is always wise to apply at least 10-15 days before your planned travel date to account for any potential delays. The approved e-Visa is sent to your email as a PDF document. For Indian passport holders, the standard e-Visa allows for a stay of up to 30 days and is valid for 120 days from the date of issue, permitting multiple entries.
Arriving in Georgia
Upon arrival at a Georgian border crossing, you must present your printed e-Visa along with your passport. Border officials may also ask to see your supporting documents, such as your return flight ticket, proof of accommodation, and evidence of travel insurance. Even with a valid e-Visa, the final decision for entry rests with the immigration officer, so having all your paperwork in order is essential for a smooth start to your Georgian adventure.
