The festive season brings joy, but also the familiar stress of Diwali travel. For millions relying on Indian Railways, a waitlisted ticket can cause anxiety. This guide will help you track your train's chart preparation and understand your status.
Understanding Chart Preparation
Before
a train departs, Indian Railways finalises the list of passengers. This process, known as chart preparation, is when final seat and berth allocations happen. It’s the moment of truth for anyone with a Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC) or a Waiting List (WL) ticket. The chart assigns vacant berths to passengers based on booking priority and quotas. If your e-ticket is still fully waitlisted after the final chart is prepared, it is automatically cancelled, and you are not permitted to board the train. Knowing how to check this status is crucial for a stress-free journey.
When Are the Charts Prepared?
Indian Railways prepares charts in two stages, giving passengers more clarity and time to make alternative plans if needed. The timing depends on the train's departure from its originating station, not your boarding station. The first reservation chart is typically prepared several hours in advance. For trains departing between 5:00 AM and 2:00 PM, the first chart is prepared by 8:00 PM the previous night. For trains departing after 2:00 PM or before 5:00 AM, this chart is prepared about 10 hours before departure. The second and final chart is prepared approximately 30 minutes before the train's scheduled departure. This final chart accounts for any last-minute cancellations, which is often when RAC tickets get upgraded to confirmed berths.
How to Check Chart Status Online
The most reliable way to track your ticket is via the official IRCTC website or the 'Rail Connect' mobile app. Simply log in and navigate to the 'PNR Enquiry' or 'PNR Status' section. Enter your 10-digit PNR number, which is printed on the top-left corner of your ticket. The system will display the current status of your ticket. After chart preparation, if your ticket is confirmed, this status will update to include your final coach and berth numbers. You can also use the 'Charts / Vacancy' feature on the IRCTC website. This allows you to view the detailed reservation chart for a specific train by entering the train number and journey date, showing all occupied and vacant berths coach by coach.
Alternative Tracking Methods
Besides the official IRCTC portal, several other methods can keep you updated. You can check your PNR status via SMS by sending your 10-digit PNR number to 139. You will receive a message with your current ticket status. Calling the railway enquiry number '139' is another option; follow the interactive voice response (IVR) instructions for PNR enquiry. Many reputable thirdparty apps and websites like MakeMyTrip, ixigo, and ConfirmTkt also offer PNR tracking services. These platforms often provide additional features like PNR confirmation predictions, which analyze historical data to estimate the probability of your waitlisted ticket getting confirmed.
What Your Status Means After Charting
Once the chart is prepared, your PNR status will show one of three main outcomes. 'CNF' (Confirmed) means you have a specific berth or seat, and the details will be displayed. 'RAC' (Reservation Against Cancellation) means you are permitted to board the train and will be given a seat to share, with a high chance of getting a full berth if one becomes available. Passengers with partially confirmed tickets (e.g., one person confirmed, one on RAC/WL) will also appear on the chart and can travel. However, if your status remains 'WL' (Waitlisted) after the final chart preparation, your online ticket is automatically cancelled, and a refund is processed. You cannot legally board the reserved coach with a fully waitlisted e_ticket.
