Your Ticket: Digital, Print, or SMS?
The first step in verification is your train ticket itself. For e-tickets booked via IRCTC, you don't necessarily need a physical printout. You can show the Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) the electronic reservation slip (ERS) on your laptop or mobile,
or the SMS sent by IRCTC. However, during the festival rush, it is always wise to carry a printed copy as a backup in case your phone runs out of battery. For unreserved digital tickets, it's mandatory to show the original ticket within the official railway app, as screenshots or forwarded images are not considered valid. If you've purchased a paper ticket from a reservation counter, you must carry the original ticket.
The Golden Rule: Carry Your Original ID
A valid, original photo identification is non-negotiable for all passengers in reserved coaches. The name on your ID must match the name on the ticket. Photocopies or images of your ID stored in your phone's gallery are not accepted. However, showing your ID, such as Aadhaar or a driving license, through the official DigiLocker app is considered a valid proof of identity. For group bookings made on a single PNR, at least one passenger listed on the ticket must present their original photo ID for the entire group to be considered valid. Failure to produce a valid ID for at least one passenger can result in the entire group being treated as travelling without a ticket.
Accepted Forms of Identification
Indian Railways accepts a wide range of government-issued photo IDs. Ensure you are carrying one of the following in its original form: Aadhaar Card, Voter ID Card, Passport, PAN Card, or Driving License. Other accepted documents include a photo ID card issued by a Central or State Government entity, a student ID card with a photograph from a recognised school or college, a nationalised bank passbook with a photograph, or a credit card with a laminated photograph. Having one of these documents ready will make the verification process smooth when the TTE arrives.
Handling Name and Boarding Point Issues
Minor spelling mistakes in a name on a ticket can often be resolved by explaining the typo to the TTE, but it's best to get it corrected beforehand to avoid any stress. For significant errors, you must visit the nearest railway reservation counter with a written application and a valid ID proof at least 24 hours before the train's departure to get it rectified. Similarly, if you need to change your boarding station, you can now do so online via the IRCTC portal or at a reservation counter until the final chart preparation, which is typically about 30 minutes before the train's departure from its originating station. This flexibility is a huge benefit during the unpredictable festival season.
Special Checks and Festival Measures
During peak festival periods like Diwali, railway authorities often conduct intensive ticket_checking drives to manage the heavy rush and prevent ticketless travel. These drives pay special attention to tickets booked under concessions (like senior citizen fares) or special quotas, requiring passengers to carry original documents to prove their eligibility. To further manage crowds, the sale of platform tickets may be suspended at major stations during the peak festival days. It's also a good idea to monitor announcements for special festival trains, which are run to accommodate the extra passenger load.
