The Next Evolution in Digital Payments
Imagine telling your phone's AI assistant to order your weekly groceries, and it not only finds the best deals but also completes the payment without you needing to scan a QR code or enter a PIN. This is the future being mapped out by the National Payments
Corporation of India (NPCI). Reports indicate that a new framework, tentatively called the Unified Agent Protocol (UAP), is in the works. This protocol would empower trusted AI agents to execute small, recurring payments on behalf of a user, all within predefined limits and rules. This shift from a user-operated system to one where users can delegate payment authority could make UPI one of the first national payment infrastructures in the world to formally support agentic AI payments. The move would build on UPI's colossal success; in August 2026, the network processed a staggering 24.51 billion transactions.
How Would an AI Agent Use Your UPI?
This isn't about giving an AI unrestricted access to your bank account. The system is being designed with control and security as core principles. The UAP is expected to be a verification layer built on top of the existing, secure UPI infrastructure. It will likely leverage two current UPI features to function. The first is 'UPI Circle,' which already allows a primary user to delegate limited payment authority to a secondary user—in this case, the AI agent. The second is 'Reserve Pay' (also known as UPI Single Block Multiple Debits), which lets a user block a certain amount of funds in their account for future, specific debits. In practice, you would authorise your AI agent upfront, setting clear rules such as spending limits, approved merchants, or transaction types. The agent could then operate within those boundaries, making payments automatically.
From Grocery Bills to Smart Investments
The initial use cases are expected to focus on convenience for low-value, high-frequency purchases. Think of automated bill payments for electricity or mobile recharges, ordering groceries, or paying for your regular cab ride. E-commerce platforms are predicted to be early adopters, allowing for a more seamless shopping experience where an AI can complete a purchase based on your instructions. Over time, the applications could become far more sophisticated. An AI agent could be instructed to purchase a flight ticket when the price drops below a certain threshold or even make systematic investments based on pre-agreed conditions. This transforms the AI from a simple assistant that provides information to an active participant that executes tasks on your behalf.
The Critical Questions: Security and Trust
Handing over financial tasks to an AI naturally raises important questions about security, fraud, and liability. The developers at NPCI are reportedly embedding safeguards from the ground up. The framework is expected to include built-in audit trails to track every transaction, robust identity checks for agents, and firm spending limits set by the user. A crucial component will be establishing a clear liability framework. This will define who is responsible—the user, the bank, the merchant, or the AI developer—if a payment is made in error or through a fraudulent transaction. As banks and payment providers adapt, they will need to develop new systems for authenticating and monitoring AI-generated transactions, which differ significantly from user-initiated ones. The success of the entire system will hinge on building user trust through transparency and robust security measures.
What is the Timeline for Agent Payments?
While there is no official launch date, details about the Unified Agent Protocol are expected to be unveiled soon, potentially at the Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai. This development is part of a broader global trend, with major players like Mastercard and Visa also developing their own agentic payment capabilities for the Indian market. Fintech firm Pine Labs has already launched its own protocol that allows AI agents to complete UPI payments after a single authorisation. The rollout on the national UPI network would be a monumental step, placing India at the forefront of AI-driven commerce. It signals a clear direction for the future of digital life in India—one that is increasingly automated, integrated, and intelligent.
