A Digital Fix for a Physical Problem
In a move to streamline this cumbersome process, Indian Railways has introduced an online system for booking excess luggage. Launched in late July 2026, this facility allows passengers with confirmed reserved tickets to declare and pay for their extra baggage from the comfort of their homes. The goal is to integrate luggage booking seamlessly with the existing ticket system, saving passengers valuable time and eliminating the need to queue up at the station. This change is designed to make journey planning more predictable and less stressful.
How to Book Your Excess Luggage Online
Using the new service is designed to be straightforward. Passengers can access the facility through the Indian Railways Parcel Portal or via their IRCTC account when managing a booking. After entering journey details like the PNR number, the portal will guide you through the process of declaring your luggage. It displays the applicable charges based on weight, your free allowance, and lists any restricted items. However, it's important to note that after making the online application, you still need to print the e-forwarding note and present the luggage at the station's parcel office for a final weigh-in before your trip.
Know Your Free Luggage Limits
Before you book, it's crucial to know how much you can carry for free. The allowance varies significantly by class. In AC First Class, the free allowance is 70 kg. For First Class and AC 2-Tier, it is 50 kg. Passengers in Sleeper Class get a 40 kg allowance, while those in Second Class can carry 35 kg for free. It's also important to remember the size restrictions: for most classes, bags should not exceed 100 cm x 60 cm x 25 cm. For AC 3-Tier and AC Chair Car, a smaller limit of 55 cm x 45 cm x 22.5 cm applies.
Calculating the Cost of Extra Bags
If your luggage exceeds the free allowance but is within the maximum limit for your class, you will be charged for the excess weight. The fee is calculated at 1.5 times the normal luggage rate. The minimum charge for any excess luggage is ₹30. The system calculates charges in slabs of 10 kg, with a minimum chargeable distance of 50 km. For some classes like AC 3-Tier and AC Chair Car, the free allowance of 40 kg is also the maximum limit, meaning online booking for excess luggage is not available for these classes.
