The most powerful signal for setting your body’s master clock is light. Specifically, the bright, blue-spectrum light that is abundant in morning sunlight. Second, and perhaps more importantly, it reinforces a healthy morning spike in cortisol. By properly timing this cortisol peak, morning sunlight helps create a more gradual, stable decline in the hormone throughout the day, preventing the sudden crash that contributes to the afternoon slump.
Your 10-Minute Sunlight Prescription
Making this a habit is surprisingly simple. The goal is to get outside for about 10 minutes within the first hour of waking. On a clear, sunny day, 5 to 10 minutes is often enough. If it's overcast, you'll want to extend that to 15 or 20 minutes, as enough of the right light still penetrates the clouds to be effective. The key is to be outside; sitting by a window isn't the same because glass filters out many of the crucial light wavelengths. You also don’t need to wear sunglasses for this short period, as they will block the very light your eyes need to detect. Simply face the general direction of the bright sky—no need to stare at the sun—and let your eyes and body register that the day has begun. You can stack this habit with something you already do, like drinking your morning tea on the porch, taking a short walk, or simply standing outside while you check your phone.

The benefits of this simple routine extend well beyond beating the afternoon slump. Consistent morning light exposure is one of the most effective ways to improve your sleep quality. By setting a clear start time for your day, you also help your body time the release of melatonin in the evening, making it easier to fall asleep. Studies also show that morning sunlight can boost mood by increasing the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter linked to feelings of well-being.
