Why Humidity Changes the Watering Game
Understanding why humidity affects your plants is the first step to better care. Plants absorb water through their roots and release it as vapour through their leaves in a process called transpiration. When the air is already saturated with moisture,
like during the rainy season, this process slows down dramatically. At the same time, the water in the soil evaporates much more slowly. This double-whammy means the soil stays wet for longer, creating a high risk of waterlogged roots. Roots need oxygen to function, but when soil is perpetually soggy, they can't breathe. This suffocating environment is the primary cause of root rot, a common and often fatal issue for houseplants.
The Golden Rule: Ditch the Schedule, Check the Soil
The single most important adjustment you can make during humid weather is to abandon a fixed watering schedule. Your plant that needed water every week in the summer might now be fine for 10 to 15 days. Instead of watering out of habit, check the soil first. The most reliable method is the finger test: insert your finger about one to two inches into the soil. If it feels dry at that depth, it's time to water. If you feel any moisture, wait a few more days and check again. This simple habit prevents the chronic overwatering that leads to most monsoon-related plant problems. When you do water, do so thoroughly until it runs out the bottom, but make sure to discard any excess water from the saucer.
How to Spot the Signs of Overwatering
Your plants will give you clues when they are struggling with too much moisture. Ironically, an overwatered plant often looks wilted, which can trick you into watering it even more. The key difference is that an overwatered plant will be drooping even when the soil is wet. Other tell-tale signs include yellowing leaves, particularly the lower ones first. You might see brown, soft spots on leaves, sometimes with a yellow halo, which can indicate a bacterial or fungal issue thriving in the dampness. Another major red flag is the smell of the soil; healthy soil has an earthy scent, while waterlogged soil can develop a sour or musty odour, signalling that rot has begun.
Improve Drainage and Airflow
Smarter watering is only half the battle; good drainage is non-negotiable. Ensure every pot has drainage holes to allow excess water to escape. If your pots are sitting in decorative cachepots without holes, always remove them for watering and let them drain completely before putting them back. Elevating pots on small stands can also improve drainage and airflow around the base. The potting mix itself plays a huge role. Heavy garden soil retains too much water. A well-draining mix, often containing ingredients like coco peat, perlite, or coarse sand, helps keep the roots aerated even in a humid environment. You can also boost air circulation in the room by using a fan for a few hours a day to help the soil surface dry out more quickly.
Adjust Light and Feeding
High humidity is often accompanied by cloudy skies and less sunlight. This reduction in light slows down photosynthesis and overall growth. To compensate, try moving your plants closer to windows where they can catch as much indirect light as possible. Rotating them every week will ensure all sides get some light exposure. Because plant growth naturally slows during these periods, their nutritional needs also decrease. This is not the time for aggressive fertilizing. In fact, it's best to reduce feeding significantly or stop altogether until the weather becomes sunnier and drier. Fertilizing a plant that isn't actively growing can lead to a build-up of salts in the soil, which can damage the already-stressed roots.
Watch for Unwanted Pests
Unfortunately, you're not the only one who enjoys the humid weather. It creates a perfect breeding ground for common houseplant pests. Fungus gnats, those tiny, annoying flies that buzz around your plants, thrive in consistently moist topsoil. Allowing the top inch or two of soil to dry out between waterings is the best way to deter them. Mealybugs, which look like tiny white cottony specks, also love warm, moist habitats and are often found in the nooks and crannies of stems and leaves. Regularly inspecting your plants, including the undersides of leaves, can help you catch any infestations early before they become a major problem.
