The Gaganyaan programme, India's first human spaceflight mission, is entering its most critical phase. Before astronauts fly, ISRO has planned a series of uncrewed test flights to validate every system, from the crew module's life support to its emergency
escape systems. The first uncrewed orbital flight, named G1, is expected in late 2026, and will be a full dress rehearsal of the final mission, without the crew. A subsequent mission may even fly 'Vyommitra', a humanoid robot, to collect data on the conditions astronauts will experience. These flights are the final, nerve-wracking steps before India sends its own 'gaganauts' into orbit, a feat that will place it in an elite club of spacefaring nations.
2. NISAR: An Eye on a Changing Planet
In one of the most significant collaborations in space history, ISRO is partnering with NASA for the NISAR (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar) mission. Scheduled for a launch as early as July 30, 2026, this advanced Earth-observation satellite is set to be a game-changer. NISAR carries a sophisticated radar system that can see through clouds and darkness, measuring changes in the Earth’s surface with centimetre-level precision. Its data will be crucial for monitoring natural disasters like earthquakes and landslides, tracking glacier melt, managing water resources, and ensuring food security by monitoring crop health. NISAR is not just a satellite; it is a powerful tool for understanding and protecting our home planet.
3. SPADEX: Mastering the Art of Docking
To build a space station or conduct complex interplanetary missions, you first need to master the cosmic ballet of docking—having two spacecraft meet and connect in orbit. This is the goal of the SPADEX, or Space Docking Experiment. This mission, which uses two small satellites, is designed to test and perfect autonomous rendezvous and docking technologies. Mastering this capability is not just a technical milestone; it is the essential building block for India’s future ambitions, including the planned Bharatiya Antariksh Station (Indian Space Station) and missions that require assembling larger spacecraft in orbit. SPADEX represents a foundational leap, enabling a future of modular space construction and satellite servicing.
4. Mangalyaan-2: A Bold Return to Mars
Following the spectacular success of the Mangalyaan orbiter, ISRO is planning an even more ambitious sequel: Mangalyaan-2. While the first mission was a triumph of orbital insertion, the second aims to do what only a handful of nations have achieved: land on the Red Planet. Current plans for the mission include not just a lander but also a rover to explore the Martian surface and even a helicopter to study the planet's thin atmosphere from the air. Tentatively scheduled for launch in the coming years, Mangalyaan-2 will investigate Mars' geology and atmosphere, searching for more clues about its past and potential habitability. It’s a giant leap forward for India's interplanetary exploration programme.
5. Shukrayaan-1: A Mission to Venus
Mars isn't the only planet in ISRO's sights. The agency is also planning Shukrayaan-1, its first-ever mission to Venus. Our planetary neighbour is a world of crushing pressure and extreme temperatures, shrouded in thick, toxic clouds. Shukrayaan-1, planned for a launch window around 2028, will be an orbiter packed with scientific instruments designed to pierce this veil. The mission aims to study Venus's mysterious, super-rotating atmosphere, map its surface, and investigate its geological processes. By studying why a planet so similar in size to Earth became such a hostile environment, scientists hope to gain valuable insights into planetary evolution and climate change.
6. Chandrayaan-4: Bringing a Piece of the Moon to Earth
After successfully landing on the Moon, the next logical step is to bring a piece of it back. That is the ambitious goal of Chandrayaan-4, a proposed lunar sample-return mission. Expected to launch around 2027, this complex mission will be a significant technological challenge, likely involving multiple launches. The plan involves landing near the lunar south pole, collecting soil and rock samples—potentially containing water ice—and launching them back to Earth for detailed analysis in our laboratories. A successful sample-return mission would provide unprecedented scientific data and serve as a crucial stepping stone for future long-duration or even crewed lunar missions.
7. The Workhorse Satellites
While the interplanetary and human spaceflight missions grab the headlines, the backbone of ISRO's busy calendar is its constant deployment of Earth-focused satellites. The coming years will see a steady stream of launches for communication, navigation, and Earth observation. Missions like the EOS series provide vital data for weather forecasting and disaster management, while new GSAT communication satellites will enhance broadband connectivity across India.
