The Power of Homemade Hydrators
Commercial soft drinks and packaged juices are often loaded with sugar and preservatives that can leave you feeling sluggish. Homemade drinks, on the other hand, put you in control. Using natural ingredients like herbs and spices, you can create refreshers
that not only quench your thirst but also offer added wellness benefits. Traditional Indian summer coolers are designed to do just that—provide hydration, replenish electrolytes lost through sweat, and support digestion during hot weather. They are a time-tested way to stay comfortable and energised, even on the most scorching of days.
Classic Cooler: Mint Jeera Water
Mint Jeera water, often known as Jaljeera, is a quintessential North Indian summer drink. Its appeal lies in its invigorating blend of cooling mint and earthy roasted cumin (jeera). Mint is well-known for its refreshing properties that help cool the body, while cumin is a celebrated digestive aid that can help prevent bloating and indigestion. Together, they create a spiced lemonade that is savoury, tangy, and incredibly satisfying. It’s the perfect drink to serve as an appetiser or to sip on a hot afternoon.
How to Make Mint Jeera Water
This recipe focuses on creating a simple, fresh paste that can be mixed with water anytime. Ingredients: 1 cup fresh mint leaves, 1/2 cup fresh coriander leaves, 1-inch piece of ginger, 2 tsp roasted cumin powder, 1 tsp black salt (kala namak), juice of 1 lemon, and sugar or jaggery to taste. Instructions: First, blend the mint leaves, coriander leaves, and ginger with a little water to form a smooth, vibrant green paste. In a large jug, combine this paste with 4-5 cups of chilled water. Stir in the roasted cumin powder, black salt, lemon juice, and your preferred sweetener. Mix everything thoroughly until well combined. For the best flavour, let it chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before serving. You can serve it over ice and garnish with a few mint leaves or some boondi for a traditional touch.
Tangy Refresher: Kokum Sharbat
Hailing from India's western coastal regions, Kokum Sharbat is a beautiful, deep-purple drink made from the dried rind of the kokum fruit. This fruit is prized in Ayurveda for its cooling properties. Kokum is a powerhouse of benefits; it's known to be an excellent digestive, relieving acidity and promoting gut health. It is also rich in antioxidants. Its flavour is uniquely tangy and slightly sweet, without the sharp acidity of some other fruits, making it incredibly refreshing and soothing during peak summer heat.
Whipping Up Tangy Kokum Sharbat
Making Kokum sharbat at home is simple and starts with creating a concentrate you can store. Ingredients: 1/2 cup dried kokum rinds, 1 cup sugar, 1/2 tsp roasted cumin powder, a pinch of black pepper, and black salt to taste. Instructions: Start by rinsing the dried kokum and soaking it in 1 cup of hot water for about 1-2 hours until the rinds soften. Mash the softened kokum in the water to release all its flavour and colour, then strain the liquid into a saucepan. Discard the rinds. Add the sugar to the kokum-infused water and bring it to a boil, stirring until the sugar dissolves completely. Let it simmer for 5-7 minutes until the syrup thickens slightly. Turn off the heat and stir in the cumin powder, black pepper, and black salt. Let the syrup cool completely. To serve, mix 2-3 tablespoons of this kokum concentrate into a glass of chilled water, stir well, and add ice cubes.
Tips for Your DIY Drinks
To get the most out of your homemade refreshers, always try to use the freshest ingredients available. Fresh mint will have a much more potent and pleasant aroma than wilted leaves. Don't be afraid to adjust the flavours to your liking. You can add more lemon for extra tang, a pinch of chaat masala for more spice, or adjust the sweetness. For a healthier alternative to white sugar, consider using jaggery or honey. Finally, make these drinks a part of your daily routine. Keeping a jug of Jaljeera or a bottle of Kokum concentrate in the fridge makes it easy to choose a healthy, hydrating option whenever thirst strikes.
