The Game-Changing Rail Journey
For decades, reaching the Kashmir Valley was an adventure in itself, primarily reliant on a long and often unpredictable road journey. The launch of the Vande Bharat Express service between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar has fundamentally transformed travel
to this paradise on Earth. This route is part of the monumental Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), an engineering marvel that navigates the challenging Himalayan terrain. The journey is not just about convenience; it is an experience. The train travels across numerous bridges and through long tunnels, including passing over the iconic Chenab Bridge, the highest railway bridge in the world. This all-weather link provides a reliable, safe, and fast alternative, cutting the travel time between Jammu and Srinagar to under five hours, a significant reduction from the 8-10 hours it can take by road.
Mapping Your Vande Bharat Route
The Vande Bharat Express operates daily services between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar, making it convenient for travellers. There are multiple services throughout the day, including morning and afternoon departures from both cities. Key stations on this 270-kilometre route include Udhampur, Katra, and Banihal. The train, numbered 26401, for instance, leaves Jammu Tawi in the morning around 6:20 AM and reaches Srinagar by 11:10 AM. The return journey offers similar convenience. These trains are specially designed for the region's climate, with advanced heating systems to ensure comfort even during harsh winters. With speeds recently being tested up to 100 kmph on critical sections like the Chenab bridge, travel times are expected to become even shorter, making this the most efficient way to enter the valley.
Booking and Planning Your Trip
Booking your seat on the Vande Bharat to Srinagar is straightforward and can be done through the official IRCTC website and app. The train offers two classes: AC Chair Car (CC) and Executive Chair Car (EC). Fares for the AC Chair Car are approximately ₹700–₹850, while the more spacious Executive Class costs around ₹1,300–₹1,400. Spring offers blooming tulips, while autumn showcases spectacular foliage. Upon arrival in Srinagar, you can easily find prepaid taxis and local buses to take you to your hotel or houseboat.
