Meet Dewi: India’s Digital Diplomat
Dewi is an artificial intelligence-driven avatar introduced by the Indian Embassy in Jakarta. Rather than a physical person, Dewi is a virtual guide designed to be the new face of the embassy on social media platforms. Her mission is to make information
about India more accessible, engaging, and relevant to both the Indian diaspora and Indonesian nationals. This digital representative will share updates on a wide array of topics including Indian culture, travel and tourism, educational scholarships, business and investment opportunities, and important consular service information. The launch is part of a broader vision to integrate emerging technologies like AI into governance and public service delivery, modernising how diplomacy works.
A Name With Deep Cultural Roots
The choice of the name 'Dewi' is a masterstroke of cultural diplomacy. Derived from the Sanskrit word 'Devi', which means goddess, 'Dewi' is also a common and respected female name in Indonesia. This single word encapsulates the shared linguistic and cultural heritage that has connected India and Indonesia for centuries. The embassy launched the avatar to coincide with the auspicious occasion of Navaratri and Durga Puja, festivals that celebrate the divine feminine, further strengthening the connection. This symbolic linkage aims to resonate deeply with local audiences and the Indian community, giving a 'divine touch' to digital diplomacy.
Why Indonesia? A Strategic Friendship
The decision to launch this initiative in Indonesia is highly strategic. The country is home to a significant Indian diaspora, with approximately 130,000 Persons of Indian Origin and 15,000 Non-Resident Indians, many of whom are professionals like engineers, teachers, and accountants. Beyond the diaspora, India and Indonesia share a robust 'Comprehensive Strategic Partnership' and deep-rooted historical ties that span over two millennia. As a key partner in India's 'Act East' policy, relations have rapidly grown across defence, security, and commerce. Dewi serves as a new-age tool to nurture these people-to-people connections, which form the bedrock of this enduring bilateral relationship.
The Future of Digital Diplomacy
The Dewi initiative moves diplomatic outreach beyond the traditional confines of embassy walls and websites, bringing it directly to people's screens. By leveraging social media, the embassy aims to simplify access to complex information, making consular services and cultural updates as easy as a conversation. The avatar is designed to communicate in both English and Bahasa Indonesia, breaking down language barriers and fostering a deeper understanding of India. While not a replacement for human diplomats, Dewi represents an innovative experiment in public engagement. It signals a future where technology plays a crucial role in strengthening international partnerships and community ties in a way that is more direct and interactive than ever before.
