Master Local Transport
Transportation is often the biggest expense in Meghalaya, but it doesn't have to be. While private taxis offer comfort, they can cost anywhere from ₹2,000 to ₹3,500 per day. The most effective budget hack is to embrace local transport. Shared Sumos and
taxis are the lifeline here, connecting major hubs like Shillong to Cherrapunji (Sohra) and Dawki. A seat in a shared taxi from Shillong to Cherrapunji can cost as little as ₹150-₹200 per person, a fraction of a private hire. These vehicles operate from dedicated stands in areas like Shillong's Anjali Cinema stand; just ask a local for directions. Be prepared for a bit of a wait as they only leave when full, but the savings are substantial. For shorter distances, some bus routes are also available and are even cheaper, like the ₹80 bus ride from Cherrapunji to Shillong.
Choose Homestays Over Hotels
To truly experience Khasi hospitality and save money, skip the commercial hotels and opt for homestays. In hubs like Shillong, budget guesthouses can be found for ₹800-₹1500 a night. However, the real gems are in the villages. Near the living root bridges in places like Nongriat, you can find basic but clean homestays for as low as ₹300-₹600 per person per night. These often come with the added benefit of home-cooked meals at very reasonable prices, which provides another layer of savings. In Mawlynnong, known as Asia's cleanest village, homestay prices range from ₹1,000 to ₹1,800, often including breakfast. Not only are homestays economical, but they also offer invaluable local insight from your hosts.
Eat Like a Local
One of the best ways to connect with a culture and save money is through its food. Avoid expensive hotel restaurants and tourist-centric cafes, where a single meal can set you back ₹500 or more. Instead, head to the small local eateries, known as 'dhabas' or 'kong' shops. Here, you can enjoy a hearty and delicious Khasi thali for just ₹80-₹120. Don't miss out on local specialities like Jadoh (a rice and meat dish) and street snacks, which can be found for under ₹100. A daily food budget of ₹500 is very achievable if you stick to these local spots, allowing you to sample authentic flavours without emptying your wallet.
Plan Your Trek to the Root Bridges
The trek to the iconic Double Decker Root Bridge in Nongriat is a highlight for many. The journey starts from Tyrna village, which is a short drive from Cherrapunji. Hiring a private taxi to Tyrna can cost around ₹400-₹500, but shared options are sometimes available. The entry fee for the bridge itself is minimal, often around ₹20-₹30. To save on guide fees, which can be ₹500-₹800, you can trek independently as the main path is well-paved with steps. However, hiring a local guide supports the community that maintains these paths. For an even more immersive and budget-friendly experience, stay overnight in Nongriat. The village quiets down significantly after the day-trippers leave, allowing you to experience the bridges in serene silence at dawn.
Travel During the Shoulder Season
The time of your visit can significantly impact your budget. The peak tourist season in Meghalaya is from October to February, when the weather is clear and pleasant. During this time, prices for accommodation and transport are at their highest. For a budget-friendly trip, consider the shoulder months like September, March, and April. During these times, the monsoon has either just ended or is yet to begin, leaving the landscape incredibly lush and the waterfalls still impressive. You'll encounter fewer crowds, and homestay owners may be more willing to negotiate prices, with rates sometimes dropping by 20-30%.
