The Science of Sweat and Humidity
To understand why humidity is so taxing, we need to look at the body's primary cooling system: sweating. When you exercise, your core temperature rises, and your body produces sweat. The magic doesn't happen from the sweat itself, but from its evaporation
off your skin, which releases heat and cools you down. However, when the air is already saturated with water vapor—as it is in high humidity—there's simply no room for your sweat to evaporate. This effectively short-circuits your body's cooling mechanism. Your body continues to produce sweat in an attempt to cool down, but because it can't evaporate, you're left feeling sticky and your core temperature continues to climb.
Your Body Under Increased Strain
With its primary cooling method compromised, your body has to work much harder to manage heat. It attempts to compensate by increasing blood flow to the skin's surface, which is a secondary way to release heat. This creates a double whammy for your system. First, it puts significant strain on your cardiovascular system, as your heart has to pump harder and faster to circulate blood to both your working muscles and your skin. This is why your heart rate can skyrocket during a humid workout, even at a pace that normally feels easy. Second, diverting blood to the skin means less oxygen-rich blood is available for your muscles, causing them to fatigue much more quickly. The result is that your perceived effort goes through the roof; a moderate run can feel as grueling as an intense sprint.
Recognising the Health Risks
This isn't just about discomfort. Exercising in high humidity significantly increases your risk of heat-related illnesses because your body overheats faster. The initial stage is often heat cramps, which involve painful muscle spasms. If you continue pushing, you risk progressing to heat exhaustion. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea, and pale, clammy skin. If left untreated, heat exhaustion can escalate to heatstroke, a life-threatening medical emergency. Heatstroke occurs when your body's temperature regulation system completely fails. Warning signs include a high body temperature (above 103°F), confusion or slurred speech, a rapid pulse, and hot, dry skin, although a person may still be sweating profusely.
How to Adapt Your Workout Safely
The key to exercising in humidity is to respect the conditions and adjust accordingly. Don't try to force your usual pace or intensity. Pay attention to the heat index, which combines temperature and humidity to give a “feels like” temperature. When the heat index is high, typically 90°F (about 32°C) or more, you should use extreme caution. Consider these adjustments: time your workouts for cooler parts of the day, like the early morning or late evening. If you must exercise midday, find shaded routes like a wooded trail. Reduce the intensity and duration of your workout; a humid day is not the time for a personal best. Finally, be flexible and willing to move your workout indoors to an air-conditioned environment if conditions are too dangerous.
Smart Hydration and What to Wear
Proper hydration is non-negotiable. Because you sweat more in humidity without the benefit of cooling, you lose fluids and essential electrolytes faster, increasing your risk of dehydration. Begin hydrating several hours before your workout, not just when you feel thirsty. The American Council on Exercise suggests drinking about two to three cups of water a few hours before you start. During your workout, sip fluids every 15 to 20 minutes. For longer or more intense sessions, a sports drink can help replenish lost electrolytes. Your choice of clothing also makes a difference. Opt for lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored attire made from moisture-wicking fabrics to help pull sweat away from your skin as much as possible.
