The Cool and Humid Deception
The primary reason rainy weather is so deceptive is its one-two punch of coolness and humidity. The cooler air and rain on your skin make you feel less hot. Your brain, which partially relies on skin temperature to gauge overheating, doesn't sound the alarm
as loudly. However, your core temperature is still rising from the physical exertion. At the same time, the air during a rainy spell is often saturated with moisture. This high humidity is the real troublemaker. Normally, your body's most effective cooling mechanism is sweat evaporation. As sweat turns from liquid to gas on your skin, it pulls a significant amount of heat away from you.
When Sweat Stops Working
In high humidity, the air is already full of water vapour, leaving little room for your sweat to evaporate. Instead of disappearing and cooling you down, sweat drips off or just sits on your skin, making you feel clammy. Your body, sensing that it isn't cooling effectively, may even double down and produce more sweat in a futile attempt to control your temperature. The result is that you are losing a large amount of fluid and essential electrolytes, but because the sweat isn't evaporating, you can't accurately judge how much you've lost. A person can lose one to two litres of fluid per hour during intense exercise in humid conditions.
Your Brain's Muted Thirst Signal
Thirst is not just a feeling; it's a complex physiological response controlled by the brain, which monitors the concentration of your blood. However, this internal signal can be influenced by external cues. The sensation of being cool and wet from the rain can psychologically blunt your perception of thirst. Your brain gets tricked into thinking, "It's cool and wet outside, so I must be well-hydrated inside." This is a dangerous illusion. Thirst is often a delayed indicator of dehydration, meaning by the time you feel thirsty, you're already behind on your fluid needs. In rainy weather, that signal may be suppressed even further.
The Real Risk: Unnoticed Dehydration
When you lose even 1-2% of your body weight in fluid, your performance suffers. Your heart has to work harder, your concentration may drop, and you become more susceptible to cramps and fatigue. In humid weather, this risk is amplified because you're losing fluid without the usual strong thirst cues telling you to replenish it. This gradual, unnoticed dehydration can lead to more serious conditions like heat exhaustion, especially if you're exercising for an extended period. The combination of a high core temperature and insufficient fluid is a recipe for trouble.
Smarter Hydration for Rainy Days
The key to safe exercise during the monsoon or in any humid weather is to be proactive, not reactive, with your hydration. Don't wait for thirst to be your guide. Instead, create a hydration plan. Start your workout well-hydrated by drinking a couple of glasses of water beforehand. During your exercise, aim to drink small, consistent amounts of water every 15-20 minutes. If you're exercising for more than an hour, consider a sports drink to replenish lost electrolytes like sodium and potassium. After your workout, continue to rehydrate. A simple way to check your hydration status is to monitor your urine colour; it should be a pale yellow.
