Why Old Rules No Longer Apply
Traditional plagiarism involves copying work from another human source. Detecting it, while not always simple, is a known process. AI-generated content is a different beast entirely. The output can be original in the sense that it may not be directly copied from any single source, making it difficult for standard anti-plagiarism software to flag. This has led to a surge in academic misconduct allegations, but the methods for proving AI use are often unreliable. Simply banning AI is not a sustainable solution, as many institutions have found. This reactive approach fails to provide students and faculty with the necessary guidance to navigate this new environment, creating inconsistency and confusion.

Recognizing the limitations of outright bans, universities are now focused on developing comprehensive AI policies. In India, the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 already emphasizes integrating AI into the curriculum, and bodies like the CBSE have introduced AI as a subject. The challenge is moving from theory to practice. Effective policies do more than just forbid misuse; they define it clearly. They establish a spectrum of acceptable and unacceptable uses, acknowledging that AI can be a powerful learning aid for brainstorming or research, but a tool for dishonesty when used to generate entire assignments. Some universities are adopting clear, tiered systems—for example, specifying which assignments forbid AI, which allow it with citation, and which actively encourage its use as a tool.
Building AI Literacy as the Best Defence
The most forward-thinking institutions are realizing that the ultimate goal isn't just to police AI, but to cultivate AI literacy. This means teaching students not only how to use these tools but also how to use them responsibly and ethically. A policy that focuses on education over punishment is seen as more effective. This involves training faculty to design assignments that are less susceptible to AI shortcuts, such as by requiring personal reflections, in-class discussions, or the application of course concepts to specific, real-world scenarios. By doing so, the focus shifts from catching cheaters to fostering critical thinking that AI cannot replicate.
Preparing for an AI-Integrated Future
Ultimately, the rush to create robust AI policies reflects a broader understanding: proficiency with AI will be an essential skill in the modern workforce.
