The Trouble with Mindless Munching
Packaged chips, instant noodles, and other ultra-processed snacks are a cornerstone of modern convenience, but this ease comes at a cost. [17] These foods are often industrial formulations, packed with excessive salt, unhealthy fats, sugar, and a long
list of additives while being low in essential nutrients. [14, 15] Studies in India have shown a dramatic rise in the consumption of these foods, which is directly linked to an increasing burden of lifestyle diseases. [13, 17] Frequent intake is associated with a higher risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart conditions. [12, 13] The high calorie, low-nutrient profile of these snacks can lead to overeating and weight gain, creating a cycle that is hard to break. [13] Making a conscious choice to swap these out for a whole-food alternative is a powerful step towards better health.
The Humble Power of Beetroot
Enter the beetroot, a nutritional powerhouse disguised as a simple root vegetable. Beets are packed with essential vitamins and minerals like folate (B9), manganese, potassium, iron, and vitamin C. [11] They are low in calories, high in fibre, and contain unique antioxidants called betalains, which give them their vibrant red colour and possess anti-inflammatory properties. [6, 9] One of the most celebrated benefits of beetroot is its high content of nitrates. [6] In the body, these nitrates convert to nitric oxide, a compound that helps relax and widen blood vessels, which can lead to lower blood pressure and improved heart health. [6, 9, 10] The fibre in beetroot also promotes good gut health by feeding beneficial bacteria and aiding digestion. [6] By baking them, you retain more of these natural benefits compared to frying. Your Guide to Crispy Masala Beetroot Chips
Making your own chips is surprisingly simple and allows you to control every ingredient. The key to crispy chips is slicing the beetroot as thinly and evenly as possible. Using a mandoline slicer is highly recommended for uniform, 1/16th-inch thick slices. [3, 5]
Ingredients: - 2-3 medium-sized beetroots - 1 tablespoon olive oil - Sea salt to taste - For the Masala Dust: - 1 teaspoon amchur (dry mango powder) - 1/2 teaspoon chaat masala - 1/2 teaspoon red chilli powder (adjust to taste) - 1/4 teaspoon roasted cumin powder
Method: 1. Preheat your oven to 190°C (375°F). [2] 2. Wash and scrub the beetroots thoroughly. There's no need to peel them. [3] Trim the tops and roots. 3. Using a mandoline or a very sharp knife, slice the beetroots into very thin rounds. [4, 5] 4. In a bowl, toss the beetroot slices with olive oil and a light pinch of salt until they are evenly coated. [4] Some recipes suggest letting the salted slices sit for 10-15 minutes to draw out extra moisture, which helps them get crispier. [8] 5. Arrange the slices in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Ensure the slices do not overlap, as this will cause them to steam rather than bake. You will likely need to work in batches. [2, 3] 6. Bake for 15-20 minutes. Keep a close eye on them after the 10-minute mark, as the thin slices can burn quickly. You may need to remove smaller, faster-cooking chips from the pan while the others finish baking. [4] 7. While the chips are baking, mix all the ingredients for the masala dust in a small bowl. 8. Once the chips are crispy, remove them from the oven. They will crisp up further as they cool. [3] Immediately transfer the hot chips to a large bowl and toss them with your prepared masala dust. The heat will help the spices adhere. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container once completely cool.
Make It Your Own
The beauty of this recipe is its versatility. You don't have to stop at beetroot. This same baking method works wonderfully for other vegetables like sweet potatoes, carrots, parsnips, and even kale. Feel free to experiment with your masala blend. Add a pinch of black salt (kala namak) for a sulphurous kick, a dash of garlic powder for depth, or a bit of ground coriander for earthy notes. The goal is to find a flavour profile you love, turning a healthy snack into a truly crave-worthy treat. By making these small, delicious swaps, you can transform your snacking habits from a source of empty calories into an opportunity for nourishment and flavour.
