A New Chapter for Scenic Rail Travel
Southern Railway has attached a special Executive Vistadome AC coach to the popular Madurai-Guruvayur Express (16327/16328), launching a new era for tourism along this historic route. This isn't a new train, but a significant enhancement to an existing
service, designed specifically to showcase the region's natural splendour. The trial service, which begins today, will run on select days of the week until mid-January 2027, giving travellers a limited-time opportunity to experience this unique journey. The addition aims to unlock the tourism potential of the area, making the journey itself a destination.
The Glass-Domed Carriage Experience
What makes the Vistadome coach special are its unique design features, tailored for sightseeing. The carriage is fitted with expansive glass windows that stretch up to the roof, offering passengers panoramic, unobstructed views of the landscape. To ensure everyone gets the best possible look, the seats can rotate, allowing passengers to face the direction that offers the most captivating scenery. This 'see-through' experience transforms the train ride from simple transit into an immersive visual tour through the heart of one of India's most beautiful terrains.
Journey Through the Sengottai-Punalur Ghat
The highlight of this journey is the traverse through the Sengottai-Punalur ghat section, a route celebrated for its dramatic and lush scenery. This stretch of the Kollam-Sengottai line is an engineering marvel, navigating the challenging terrain of the Western Ghats with a series of tunnels, bridges, and sharp curves. Passengers can expect to be mesmerised by views of dense green forests, cascading waterfalls (especially during monsoon season), and deep valleys that unfold as the train snakes its way through the mountains. This historic line connects Kerala and Tamil Nadu, offering a journey that is as rich in history as it is in natural beauty.
The Crown Jewel: Aryankavu Pass
The headline attraction mentioned is, of course, the Aryankavu Pass. This mountain pass, also known as the Schencottah Gap, serves as a natural gateway between the Kollam district in Kerala and the Tenkasi district in Tamil Nadu. As the train passes through this area, passengers are treated to some of the most picturesque moments of the entire trip. The route near Aryankavu is particularly noted for its historic 13-Arch Bridge (Pathimoonnu Kannara Palam), a British-era structure made of stone and limestone that has become a landmark in itself. The combination of rolling hills, deep forests, and architectural marvels makes this section a paradise for photographers and nature lovers alike.
What Else to Spot Along the Way
Beyond the main pass, the journey is dotted with other points of interest. Near Aryankavu, you can find the famous Palaruvi Waterfalls, a stunning cascade located just a few kilometers from the main route. The region is also home to the Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary, meaning the forests you see from your window are teeming with life. The train journey offers glimpses of rubber plantations, traditional villages, and the Kallada River, providing a rich tapestry of South Indian life and landscape. For those interested in spirituality, the ancient Ayyappan temple at Aryankavu is another key site in the region.
