Asking it to “act as a history professor” or “act as a friendly tutor” changes its tone and focus. Finally, define the format. Do you want bullet points, a step-by-step guide, a comparison table, or a simple analogy? A weak prompt like “explain fiscal policy” becomes much stronger: “Act as an economics professor. Explain the main tools of fiscal policy for a first-year college student. Present it as a simple bulleted list with one example for each tool.”

The real power of AI for studying is its ability to become a personalised, interactive tutor. Instead of asking for answers, ask the AI to quiz you. You can paste your notes and ask it to generate multiple-choice questions or flashcards. A great technique is to use the Socratic method, where the AI guides you to the answer with questions instead of just providing it. Use a prompt like: “I’m studying the laws of thermodynamics. Act as a Socratic tutor and ask me five questions to test my understanding of the second law. Don’t give me the answers until I try first.” This method forces you to think critically and identify gaps in your knowledge, which is far more effective for long-term learning.

Use it to challenge your own arguments for an essay by asking it to “act as a skeptical reviewer and find weaknesses in this paragraph.” Ask it to explain a complex topic in different ways, like through a story or an analogy, until you truly understand it.
