The New Visa-Free Rule
After a period of confusion, the Thai cabinet has confirmed its latest visa policy for several countries, including India. In a decision made on July 14, 2026, Thailand will continue to offer visa-free entry to Indian passport holders, but the maximum
duration of stay will be set at 30 days. This decision reverses a temporary 60-day visa exemption that was in place and scraps an earlier, more restrictive proposal from May 2026 that had caused a significant drop in tourist arrivals from India. The government stated this move is designed to align with the typical travel patterns of Indian tourists while supporting the country's vital tourism sector.
Why Were Changes Made?
The recent adjustments are part of a broader overhaul of Thailand's visa framework, aimed at enhancing national security and preventing the misuse of tourist visas. Officials had expressed concerns that the longer 60-day visa-free stay, which was available to 93 countries, was being exploited for non-tourism activities, including illegal work. The initial proposal to drastically cut the list of visa-exempt countries created significant uncertainty and led to a decline in arrivals from key markets like India. In response, the government opted for a more balanced approach, settling on a 30-day visa-free stay to maintain strong tourism ties while also tightening controls.
What This Means for Indian Travellers
For Indian holidaymakers, the key change is the length of stay. While the 60-day visa-free period is ending, the confirmation of a 30-day visa-exempt entry provides much-needed clarity. This is a significant update from early July, when advisories suggested the visa-free scheme had ended entirely, requiring travellers to prepare for stricter Visa on Arrival rules, including carrying proof of funds of approximately THB 20,000 in cash (around ₹58,000). While the visa-free status is now confirmed at 30 days, it is still wise to carry all necessary travel documents. This includes a passport with at least six months of validity, confirmed return tickets, and proof of accommodation.
Stricter Border Checks and Digital Cards
Alongside the visa changes, travellers should be aware of stricter enforcement at border checks. Immigration officials are more closely scrutinising travel patterns to identify individuals who may be misusing tourist visas for long-term stays. All travellers must also complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online within 72 hours before arrival. This system is designed to improve the screening process and monitor foreign arrivals more effectively. In a separate update, a new, more efficient land border checkpoint at Sadao (on the Thai-Malaysian border) opened on July 11, which could impact travellers entering via that route.
How to Plan Your Trip Now
With the 30-day visa-free rule confirmed, you can proceed with planning your Thailand holiday. If your intended stay is under 30 days, you will not need to apply for a visa beforehand. However, if you plan to stay longer, you will need to apply for a formal tourist visa through a Thai embassy or consulate. Always double-check the latest official advisories from the Royal Thai Embassy and the Embassy of India in Bangkok before booking and departure, as rules can be subject to further review. Ensure you have digital and physical copies of your passport, flight bookings, and hotel confirmations. Being well-prepared remains the best strategy for a smooth and enjoyable trip.
