A Window to the Clouds
The star of this journey is undoubtedly the Vistadome coach, an engineering marvel designed for panoramic viewing. Unlike conventional train cars, these coaches feature massive glass windows, and most impressively, a transparent glass roof. This design provides
an uninterrupted, 360-degree view of the surroundings. The seats are equally innovative, with many able to rotate, allowing passengers to face the direction that offers the best scenery at any given moment. The air-conditioned environment ensures comfort, free from the noise and dust of the outside world, making it ideal for photographers and families alike. This 'glass train', as it's often called, transforms a simple commute into a cinematic experience, making it one of the most sought-after rail journeys in the country.
The Journey Through the Eastern Ghats
The train route from Visakhapatnam to Araku is an adventure in itself, climbing from sea level into the heart of the Eastern Ghats. Covering a distance of approximately 128 kilometres, the train navigates through an astonishing 58 tunnels and crosses over 84 bridges. Each tunnel creates a dramatic transition, plunging passengers into darkness before revealing another breathtaking vista of deep valleys and rolling hills. The journey, which takes about four hours, passes through the scenic Anantagiri ghat section, offering spectacular views that keep you glued to the windows. The slow and steady climb allows ample time to soak in the changing landscapes, from coastal plains to dense, hilly forests.
Monsoon's Magical Touch
While the journey is beautiful year-round, the monsoon season adds a layer of unparalleled magic. The rains rejuvenate the entire valley, turning the landscape into a vibrant carpet of green. Waterfalls, many of which are seasonal, come alive and can be seen cascading down hillsides directly from the train. The valleys are often shrouded in mist, with clouds floating just above the mountains, creating a dreamy, ethereal atmosphere. This lush, rain-washed scenery, viewed through the expansive glass of the Vistadome coach, is precisely what makes this trip a top-tier monsoon travel option. The experience is less about the destination and more about the ever-unfolding spectacle of nature at its most dramatic.
Exploring Araku Valley
Upon arrival, the Araku Valley offers a serene escape. The region is famous for its sprawling coffee plantations, and a visit to the Coffee Museum is a popular activity. Nature lovers can explore attractions like the Padmapuram Botanical Garden or the stunning Chaparai and Katiki waterfalls, which are particularly impressive during the monsoon. For a dose of culture and history, the Tribal Museum provides insight into the lives of the local communities. Just before reaching Araku, many travellers opt to get down at Borra Guhalu station to explore the magnificent Borra Caves, one of the largest and oldest cave systems in India, famous for their fascinating stalactite and stalagmite formations.
