Simplified Visas for Indian Travellers
Gone are the days of complex visa applications for these Caucasus gems. For Georgia, most Indian passport holders can apply for an e-Visa online. The process is entirely digital, costs around $20 plus service fees, and typically takes 5-7 working days.
You'll need a valid passport, proof of funds, accommodation details, and travel insurance. Even better, if you hold a valid visa or residence permit from countries like the USA, UK, or any Schengen nation, you can enter Georgia visa-free for up to 90 days. Armenia also offers a streamlined e-Visa system for Indian citizens, with fees starting from around ₹700 for a 21-day stay. However, there are conditions. Applicants usually need to provide either a valid visa from a qualifying country (similar to Georgia's list) or an invitation letter along with flight and financial proofs. A temporary visa-free policy for Indians holding valid residence permits from specific countries, including the US, EU, and UAE, is also in effect for parts of 2026.
Crafting Your Budget Itinerary
Combining Georgia and Armenia into one trip is highly recommended. A typical 8 to 10-day itinerary allows you to experience the highlights of both. Many travellers start in Tbilisi, Georgia's vibrant capital, explore for a few days, and then travel overland to Yerevan, Armenia's capital. The journey between the two cities itself is a scenic adventure. A popular route involves taking a 'marshrutka' (minibus), which is an affordable and authentic local experience. The ride takes about 5-6 hours, including a relatively smooth border crossing at the Sadakhlo-Bagratashen checkpoint. This allows you to witness the dramatic shift in landscapes as you move from one country to the other. Plan to spend at least 4-5 days in each country to avoid feeling rushed.
Budgeting: What to Expect
Both countries are incredibly budget-friendly compared to Western destinations. Armenia is often considered slightly cheaper than Georgia, especially for food and daily expenses. A comfortable mid-range trip could cost between ₹70,000 to ₹1,30,000 per person for about a week. A daily budget of ₹3,000 - ₹4,000 per person is a good starting point for a backpacker, covering accommodation in hostels, local food, and public transport. Return flights from major Indian cities like Mumbai or Delhi to Tbilisi can be found for around ₹40,000 - ₹45,000 if booked in advance. Local meals are a steal; you can eat well for under ₹500 per meal. Transportation within cities and between towns via marshrutkas is also very cheap.
Affordable Stays and Transport
Accommodation options are plentiful and cater to all budgets. In cities like Tbilisi and Yerevan, you'll find a wide range of hostels, guesthouses, and affordable Airbnb apartments that offer great value. Hostels are not only cheap but also a fantastic way to meet other travellers. Guesthouses, often run by local families, provide a more authentic cultural experience and usually include a delicious homemade breakfast. For getting around, marshrutkas are the backbone of public transport in the Caucasus. They connect all major towns and cities and are the most cost-effective way to travel longer distances. In the cities, ride-hailing apps are widely available and offer very reasonable fares for getting around quickly.
Must-Do Activities on a Shoestring
The best things in Georgia and Armenia are often free or very cheap. In Georgia, spend your days wandering the charming, cobblestoned streets of Tbilisi's Old Town, marvel at the Holy Trinity Cathedral, and hike up to the Narikala Fortress for panoramic city views. For a low-cost day trip, take a marshrutka to Mtskheta, the ancient capital, and visit its UNESCO World Heritage sites. In Armenia, many of the ancient monasteries that dot the landscape have free entry. Explore the temple of Garni and the stunning Geghard Monastery, carved out of a mountainside. A visit to Lake Sevan, one of the largest high-altitude lakes in the world, is another must-do that costs very little. Simply enjoying the breathtaking natural scenery on a hike is one of the most rewarding and completely free experiences in both countries.
