Ashish Nehra’s coaching resume is short but spectacular. Taking the reins of the new Gujarat Titans franchise in 2022, he achieved what many thought impossible. He guided the team to a championship title in their debut season, becoming the first Indian
head coach to win the coveted IPL trophy. This was no fluke. Under his guidance, the Titans have been a model of consistency, reaching the final again in 2023 and 2026. Nehra’s coaching philosophy appears to be a mix of tactical shrewdness and a relaxed, player-first environment. He is often seen on the boundary edge, paper in hand, but his players speak of the freedom and clarity he provides. This success has naturally led fans and pundits to wonder if he is the heir apparent for the national team.
A Different Ball Game
While Nehra’s franchise success is undisputed, coaching an IPL team and coaching the Indian national team are two vastly different challenges. The IPL is a two-month sprint; coaching India is a year-round marathon. The international job involves relentless travel, immense public scrutiny, and navigating the complex dynamics of a team that is always in the spotlight. Nehra himself has highlighted these differences, noting that the travel demands alone, often spanning eight to nine months a year, make the role incredibly taxing. It’s a relentless grind that has seen even the most resilient coaches burn out within a few years. The pressure of representing a billion hopes is a weight far heavier than any franchise trophy.
Nehra’s Own Words
So, what does the man himself think? Recently, Nehra has been quite candid about his immediate future. Speaking at an event, he clarified that while coaching India would be a “great honour and a privilege,” he does not currently hold that ambition. “I never plan things like that. We'll see in the future. No, no ambition. I'm very happy where I am,” Nehra stated. In his typical straightforward and humorous style, he joked that any such offer would first require a serious discussion with his wife, whom he called the “High Commission,” due to the extensive time away from family. This suggests that while the door isn't permanently closed, he is in no rush to walk through it, prioritising his current role and personal life.
The Current Landscape
The conversation around Nehra also has to exist within the current context of Team India's coaching setup. Gautam Gambhir currently holds the position of head coach, and while his tenure has faced scrutiny, he remains in charge. Furthermore, with major tournaments and a packed international schedule, the BCCI is managing a complex web of assignments. For instance, VVS Laxman is set to coach the team at the 2026 Asian Games, as Gambhir will be with the senior side for a concurrent ODI series against the West Indies. This indicates that the board is utilising a pool of top coaching talent for different assignments. For Nehra, this means any potential opening for the head coach role is not immediately on the horizon, allowing him to continue building his legacy in the IPL without immediate pressure to decide on a national role.
