The festive season is here, and for millions, that means a train journey home. As Indian Railways prepares for the Diwali rush with special trains, navigating crowded stations can be stressful. This checklist will ensure you have everything you need.
Your Ticket and a Valid ID
This is the most critical part of your journey. For any reserved ticket, at least one passenger in a group must carry a valid, original photo identification card. While a digital copy of your e-ticket on your phone is sufficient, your ID must be either the physical original or displayed live through official apps like DigiLocker or m-Aadhaar. A simple photo of your ID stored in your phone's gallery is not considered valid. Accepted original photo IDs include an Aadhaar card, Voter ID, Passport, PAN card, or Driving Licence. A government-issued photo ID, a student ID from a recognized institution, or a nationalized bank passbook with a photograph also work. Failure to produce a valid ID for at least one passenger on the ticket can result in the entire group being treated as travelling without a ticket.
Know Your Luggage Limits
Festive travel often means carrying extra bags and gifts, but it's important to know the rules to avoid hefty fines. The free luggage allowance per passenger varies by class: 70 kg for AC First Class, 50 kg for AC 2-Tier, 40 kg for Sleeper Class, AC 3-Tier and AC Chair Car, and 35 kg for Second Class. Suitcases in AC 3-Tier and Chair Car have a stricter size limit of 55cm x 45cm x 22.5cm to ensure they fit under the berths. If you are travelling with more luggage than the free allowance, you can book the excess amount in advance at a charge of 1.5 times the standard rate. However, if you're caught with un-booked excess luggage during your journey, the penalty is a steep six times the normal rate.
Absolutely No Flammable Items
Safety is paramount, especially on crowded trains. Indian Railways has a strict zero-tolerance policy for carrying flammable or explosive items. This includes firecrackers of any kind, kerosene, gas cylinders, matchboxes, and lighters. Carrying any of these prohibited items is a punishable offence under the Railways Act and poses a serious risk to everyone on board. During the festive season, railway authorities increase vigilance and luggage inspections to prevent such items from being brought onto trains. Leave the fireworks for your destination.
A Kit for Comfort and Health
Long journeys during the festive rush require some preparation for personal comfort. Pack a small bag with essentials to keep within easy reach. This should include a reusable water bottle, some nonperishable snacks, and any personal medications you might need. A power bank for your phone is a modernday essential for staying connected. With crowded coaches, maintaining hygiene is also important, so carry hand sanitiser and tissues. It is also wise to pack a basic firstaid kit with essentials like bandages and pain relievers for any minor issues that may arise during travel.
Digital and Financial Preparedness
While you must carry an original ID, many other aspects of your journey can be managed digitally. Having the IRCTC Rail Connect app can help you track your train's status and booking details. It's also wise to use digital payment methods like UPI for any purchases at stations or on the train to reduce the risk associated with carrying large amounts of cash. However, always keep a small amount of cash for situations where digital payments might not be available. Arriving at the station well in advance is crucial, as platforms and ticket counters will be exceptionally busy.
